MG MGF Technical - funny rattling at idle
I have a strage rattle not unlike a clutch bearing chatter at idle. It isn't the clutch bearing though as the rattle continues clutch in or out When i had the car MOTed I asked trident to locate the rattle and they said that it want anything obvious, so would sir book it in for a session! which of course i havent done. I had the engine cover off recently and couldnt find anything obvious but at idle the engine when hot does seem to vibrate forwards and backwards a fair bit. Another source, the alternator, seems ok to me and a waggle of the drivewheel showed no wear So I dunno! its been like this for a while now Any Ideas? Neil |

Is it a VVC. Mine rattles a bit at idle. Or the exhaust brackets? Bruce |

I've had exactly the same noise on a non VVC 1.8 after a long run on the motorway. I too tried the clutch and looked for anything loose. Nothing obvious. |

i have noticed a similar noise from my '96 vvc. More noticeable when stood still in neutral - and diminishes when the clutch is depressed. Its been like this for a year with no deterioration. |

I also had a similar noise on a 1.8i, at one of the hot stops on the Treffen. Haven't noticed it before, but I'm not going to worry about it...... |

I had a rattley oil top up tube |

David, thought your car was a VVC? Anyway the rattling was jackie telling you to slow down, lol, ;-) Mike. |

Do your cars have the exhaust manifold brace bracket fitted that Rover fitted post 2000. This is very difficult to fit but kills off the noise you get which sounds like a dry bearing rattling. Details of the bracket are in the archive. I fitted one last Saturday and it took me all morning. But it was worth it. Rattle I've had for the last 6 years has now gone. Doh! |

No Mike, just a particularly good 1.8i it seems. And the dark side is finally beckoning..... |

The oil top up neck vibrates on my car too Will - although I am not sure how to cure it :o( Also had a highish frequency vibration from a split exhaust backbox heat shield. That was cured by dumping it unceremoniously in a skip ;o) |

David >> And the dark side is finally beckoning..... << So Jackie won't be selling the car just yet then <grin>?? Stefan |
