The wiring behind your stereo is a favourite spot for a short. There are a lot of sharp edges in there that can chafe a wire and cause it to earth. The easiest way to see is to remove your centre air vent - place a wide flat object under the edge and prise it up and it'll just pop out. This will allow you get access to the rear of your radio. You might need to pull it out slightly for some working space.

thanks a lot david i will give that a try.

Also check the boot light and wiring at the hinge as this can wear as well.

Check that there is not a blown interior light bulb.

Usually they go open circuit, but can sometimes create a short-circuit.

thanks all for the help hopefuly i will find the offending wire.

I had the same issue a few months back - in my case it was the wiring near the boot hinge.
