MG MGF Technical - Gear Box

Hi, Ive got a '97' MGF VVC. Last week I had a new engine put in and at the same time the garage replaced a worn clutch. Yesterday I was driving through town and I couldn't get into 5th gear, then when I stopped I did'nt have any gears, luckily I found one to get me home.....but now the only gear I've got is reverse. The gear stick will only go in two places, up and down, both reverse, can't get it in neutral either. I just recently spent £1300 on a new engine, so I'm hoping that someone out there can tell me it's not the gear box that has gone?? and maybe, hopefully, something to do with the clutch??? Has anyone any ideas on this?? Please?

I'm surprised no-one's answered this ...
It's almost certainly a gear-change cable problem.
The clip on the gearbox end of one cable broke on mine - the clip itself was about 30p, total job at dealer was about 30quid.
The broken clip gave the same symptoms as you describe.

I hope it's something that simple in your case
Steve

Missed this thread - but I agree with you Steve - sounds like a relatively simple and cheap gear selector cable fault. As Steve mentions Andy, sometimes it is simply the cable becoming detatched from the selector arm on the gearbox (probably not all that surprising given all the work you've had done of late). Failing that, the cable itself has failed - not unheard of - but you'd be very unlucky to have this after everything else has happened!

yeah happened to me a few months back. there's a bracket where the cable attaches to the gear box. Little clip holds it in place. easy to replace

Hi, thanks for the help, I called the RAC out on Saturday and luckily you were all right, it was the clip, it had cable tied by the previous garage (cowboys!) Can anyone tell what the name of this clip is and where I can get one from, will Rover stock them or can i go to somewhere like Halfords and pick one up??

Cheers, a relieved Andy!

From Dieter's on-line electronic parts catalogue: http://www.lame-delegation.de/mgfcar.de/epc/6463.htm

You are probably after clip (12) part number UYC10006

Good luck! Nice to have a cheap solution :o)

Cheers Rob........ I'd be lost without this site!
