MG MGF Technical - Gear box bell crank

Hi

Im installing a Mike Satur Slick Shift SSK 1V. Im nearly finished but having difficulty removing the roll pin which holds the bell crank to the gear box.

I can see that it needs to be punched out somehow but its jammed in solid.

What have other people used to get it out or any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks
Andrew

Long time ago I used an old drill bit of appropriate size and a big hammer.

I don't know the answer but best to pop a pair of googles on if you are hitting a drill bit as they are very hard and brittle and could go all over the shop.

Use a roll pin drift 8mm dia. This has a dimpled top to seat on the roll pin.

Use the biggest hammer you can find, (I used a 4lb lump hammer) and try to line up the drift with the axis of the roll pin to avoid wasting energy. It will go eventually; once it starts to move, it goes quickly.

Most importantly: spray huge amounts of WD-40 on the pin and wait for a while before hitting it. I did it this way and it finally could be punched out!

The _problem_ is meeting the best working angle to kick it out with a standard 8mm pin and the mentioned big hammer.
Pin with dimpled top is of course the best I think.

Done that with help of the BBS advices the other year.

Thanks for your replies

I ended up spraying it with wd40 and left it over night

I then belted it with hammer and 8mm pin literally 40 times, once it started to move it come out fairly quickly.

Andrew, well was it worth all the effort?. How much better is your gear shift.

For those that are interested in my experience of the SSK IV by Mike Satur.

All the plasticy bits have been made redundant and the rose joints are much better quality. The main improvement I found is no sloppiness in the lever at all. The gear change literally 'clicks' into gear (including neutral) and feels very precise.

The length of the gear change is the same and the height of the lever is the same though.

One thing to note is that the car goes into reverse much better now (Which is probably due to the time I took to adjust the gear linkages as best a could)

It was a fiddly job to do but well worth the time and I wouldnt go back to the old gear change (Its hard to beleive how such small changes can effect the feel of the entire car)

For those in Australia that are interested it ended up costing $Au 620 which included parts, shipping and import duty. It is VERY expensive and cost is obviously a major factor involved in whether or not to buy this part. I also just bought a militek exhaust and it sounds fantastic but thats another story

thanks

Andrew, I have a Miltek exhaust and have to agree about the sound BUT have to drive very gentley through the middle of town as it's a bit LOUD.
I fitted a B&G quick shift which I was not very impressed with but when I fitted their Bell Crank Assembley this transformed the gear shift. I have to agree with our import duty and GST plus a lousy exchange rate things are a bit expensive for the good bits. Andrew
