MG MGF Technical - Gear Selection Problems

It's getting worse - and noticably so since my clutch bearings needed replacement last year.

It is getting hit and miss selecting any gear first time, particularly first & second, and first gear sometimes takes a lot of coaxing when stationary.

I don't think that this is a problem with selection adjustment as both Techspeed and my dealer have looked at that in recent months. Is it the disengagement of the clutch (it is now new!) or a problem with the gearbox?

Any ideas gratefully received.

Peter.

see for gearbox oil level and refill in any way.

Thanks Dieter.

That does sound a possibility - and a job for the weekend.

On reflection, shouldn't gearbox oil level be part of the (9 year) service I had recently.

I wonder if they did?

Peter,
One way to find out isn't there, but do check for leaks as it might have been changed or topped up but leaked out.

Do you park it in the same place each day, check the ground for signs of thick oil residue.

You are quite right Adrian.
My garage floor remains reassuringly clean so I will just have to try to put some in and see what happens.

My gear selection (on TF160) improved consideably after I re attached a gear change cable where it had come adrift from locating clips at the point a cable passed over the top of the gearbox.

Poorly located cables must make for movement which would impact the gear change.

Well, doesn't a bit of oil make a difference!

I managed to get about 0.7 litre into the gearbox - and probably overfilled a little because the back was on axle stands. The gear change is now transformed back to where it should be and even reverse crunches rather less.

Did my dealer really check the level last month?

Thanks for the advice.

Peter.
