MG MGF Technical - Gear shift lever -long?-

Looking at the gear shift lever sometimes I find that it seems to be a bit too long. I would like to reduce it in lenght -make it shorter-, however not quite sure about possible regretable results. And if possible, which would be the best way to do it. I will be grateful for any advice about.
Best wishes

Mike,

just one of several options:
http://www.mgfcar.de/gear_stick/index.htm

There are several different and all depends on what knob you like to use.
The existing needs drill works to meet the lever diameter. I remember some here just adhered it to the cut lever then.
Notice, the black colour of the lever below the threa is a *shrink hose* only. Can be pulled off complete with some force.

Mike,
I got a hacksaw and cut the shaft just at the bottom of the thread. I put the Momo Leather air knob on (almost exactly the same as the one in Dieter's pics).
It took about 20 mins all in, and has totally transformed the gear change. It's brilliant! HTH

I agree with the comments from Kieren except that I cut about a cm below the thread before fitting a MOMO knob.

The MOMO is held on by hidden grub screws and is supplied with several plastic sleeves to accomodate different diameters of shaft.

I have been amazed by the improvement.

Suggest following Kieren and cut to bottom of thread and try first. You can always cut a bit more off afterwards.

Do it!

I have also taken this route, and I must admit the 'throw' is now much shorter!

I've said for many years that shorter is better!

Thank you all very much indeed. Your opinions are most valuable. I will go for the shortening, at least in this subject -been an urologist I can not fully agree with John Ponting...-.
Anyway the gear know that I use is an Italian one, similar to the MoMo -Allumino Simoni Racing-.
Thanks and all good wishes.

Dear Members,
I did follow Dieter and Kieren suggestions and went for the circumcision of the gear shaft of my F. The whole thread was resected. I absolutely agree that it was a nice big change both visual and functional -I almost agree with John Pointer now!-
Thank you all.

Glad we could all help.

On an associated matter Mike, are you able to graft an extra bit on for those who want a bit more length and are prepared to forgo precision?

I have seen lots of ads and received lots of unsolicited email but would rather deal with a fellow BBS poster.
John Ponting

LOL :)))

John,
There is another forum for that kind of question. However, I would suggest rather happily stay as nature has provided. "Gear shaft" enlarging procedures are quite traumatic and in my opinion not worth the effort.
