MG MGF Technical - Gear slackness

I have an MGF VVC (97). I noticed that my gear stick was a little slack, so I decided to remove the interior of the car surrounding the gear stick and see if I could tighten it up. I have now done this but it seems like there is something missing as the gear stick does not automatically spring back into neutral after it is popped out of first, should there be any springs or anything in that area, any help or diagrams would be appreciated....

Cheers, Andy

Have you overtightened anything?

Would echo about overtightened.

like this ?

Almost happens from to much clearance on the RH side, with no solution on any adjustment.

I've added a thin 0.6 mils piece of sheet metal between that slide bearing. 0.4 mm would have been better, but I hadn't available.

Final solution is a so called Slick Shift Gear Kit (SSK) from UK Suppliers (Mike Satur, B&G and more?)

>automatically spring back
No, nothing but the piece of weight on the bottom and the force from the gear cables (gear box)

Yeah I think I could have possibly overtightened but, if I loosen the nuts the gears fell like a stick in a bucket of water........... should there be no forms of spring down there......??
Andy

No, nothing but that weight at the lower end and the gear cables.

Did you already check the gear box side of the cables ?
The rear ball joints rubber surround is prone to wear and this would result in slacky gearing aswell.

Everything else relates to excessive play in the mentioned bearings of the assy itself, from missing friction.

I recall, B&G offers a 30? quid kit with new selector bracket and two of gear cable linkage ball joints. This would help to overcome the troubles with worn rear ball joints. It's part of the more expensive SSK.

Recently had the same slack gear problem, with problems staying in second and engaging reverse. Got MS to fit a SSK. Solved problem and provides better then new crispness.
