MG MGF Technical - Gear stick has turned to jelly

Hi

Well parked up outside blockbusters, returned to my car tried to put it in reverse and there was a 'rough' sound and then my gear stick was all loose and like a computer joystick. It appears to be stuck in 1st gear as it still drives, but the gear stick feels as if its broken? im real worried as I dont know what is wrong and I imagine it will be v costly to fix, pls any adivce would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Tom

Almost certainly the cables. I've just been reading a thread about how to check. Was it just a few threads down or on another bbs?
JohnP

found it - Dieter on MGF General

You can check by removing the ash tray and the cubby box; cables run along the tunnel.
JohnP

If you're lucky, the cable will have just slipped off (50p for a little plastic thing); if unlucky, the bngger has snapped (~£100 + £300 labour from your friendly MGR dealer).
Steve Madden

Hi.

Most certainly lower cable has snapped. £65 for the cable and if you want to diy than I recomend Rob's site for instructions.

Valter.
Valter

Hi and thanks everyone for your advice, busy working at the mo but will strip it down over the weekend and see whats to be done, anymore advice off where to go get it fixed apart from the obvious mg dealer would be helpful, thnks and il keep everyone informed of progress

Not technically challenging. Most non franchised garages should be able to do it - especially if you print Rob's instructions for them.
JohnP

Unfortunately, the website is still down thanks to technical problems with the server.

However, Valter's instructions can be located on the webarchive tool: http://web.archive.org/web/20040306222855/www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/gearbox_cable.html

Good luck Tom :o)
