MG MGF Technical - Gearbox problems

Hi Guys

Seems im becoming a regular !... recently its all going wrong !!
I have a 97 MGF only 40k on the clock .. today i was driving along and went to go up to 3rd and it seemed very soft? the gearstick then went very 'floppy' i then couldnt get into 1st gear and had to pull away in 2nd... 3rd gear then seized up and finally after stopping and trying all the gears it jammed in reverse and there it stayed! ive had to park it up and leave it...surely the gearbox hasnt gone ??? the gear stick is now flexible to say the least?? please help !! N

Sounds like you have snapped gear selector cable(s), the gear box is probably fine...

Stu has had plenty of experience of this particular 'quirk' of the MGF ;o)

It's possible the cable hasn't actually snapped, but the balljoint connector has detached. Involves undignified crawling I'm afraid, but roughly in between the rear wheels you'll see the two gearchange cables linked to the selector mechanism; check both are still attached - if one is hanging off, it should press back on fairly easily.

If both balljoint ends are still atached, the cable is likely to have snapped. Having done the ring-round recently looking for a new cable, there is a severe drought at present. Breakers yards or dealers in secondhand parts are your most likely source, the waiting time on new stock looks to be months rather than days or weeks 8-(

Happy grovelling ;o)

Might be worth trying Mike Satur or MGF Centre for parts if you need any.

Gear cables for the TF are much easier to find than for the F, but if you go down this route you will require a TF bell crank as well. Mike Satur keeps stocks of both parts.

What is a reasonable labour time for replacing a broken gear selector cable? For a proper MG/Rover garage, I mean?
