MG MGF Technical - Gearbox selector cable change and subframe

Valter Fernandes of Lisbon managed according to a posting on the web to change a MGF Gearbox Selector Cable without dropping the sub frame et al. Has anyone else been able to do this and how easy was it?

I do not want to start the job this weekend before making sure it can be done.
Julian

I used Valter's instructions and found then very good. The job is neither technically, nor physically demanding, but it is very tedious because it involves stripping out the entire console from front to back. I managed to work around the seats without too much problem.

The two critical parts of the job were (a)removing and refitting the closing seal where the cables go through the rear bulkhead because there is not much clearance between it and the engine and (b) removing the roll pin that holds the bellcrank in place. You relly do need a dimpled 8mm drift to do this in any reasonable time. Valter do the complete job in a day, but it took me my spare time over 2 weeks.

The consolation is that ex MG garages generally charge around £400 labour for the task so you it is worth it if you are patient and don't need the car every day.

Central tunnel and seats already out!. But what is 'a dimpled 8mm drift' please?
Julian

Could confirm the *Valter-Process* from another German MGF owner.

Chris is right with the closing seal.
Have a good look to the parts before you start. To understand how it works.

???? (LOL) ;)

I think Chris means a flat 8mm ratchet ring spanner ?

There are some of the 8mm bolts behind the subframe aswell.

Dieter - many thanks. I have to confess I spent this afternoon on your website looking at all the jobs I could be doing!
Julian

LOL, it's a pleasure to give a little back.

Nine years ago when I got my first MGF, I heard about "cigar lighter illumination". I translated this to German language for Michael Bender from Richards mediatek site. Do you remember ? http://www.mgfcar.de/cig.lighter/index.htm

Dieter

That takes a long way back Dieter - I remember 'double sided adhesive tape' :-)
Ted Newman

BoooHooohhh, recalling the sticky stuff. Me hardly got it sound into the old brain :)

Wasn't 'barrel clamp' another famous case of teaching the silly German ?
Dieter

Dieter -- if only our German was as good as your English !
Ted Newman

Dieter, I do remember the cigar illumination and my amazement that MG Rover had not bothered to connect the light to the loom! My MGF is 10 years old now and it is good to still see some of the old names still around.

I remember reading Dirk's (?) postings on his troubles with his MGF and saga with the ICON chip - pioneering days then!
Julian

Oh yes our Dirk - the guy that did not have a thrpttle pedal just an ON - OFF switch :-)
Ted Newman

Sorry folks, work keeps me from following threads as much as I'd like.

I replaced my gear cables around the time that Dieter did his and I remember we both had problems shifting the roll pin. It was Mike Satur who suggested using a dimpled drift. The drift has a reduced diamter end which fits inside the roll pin with the shoulder against the end so that you can knock out the pin at the right angle. I wish I knew had a ratchet spanner, because it would have made removing and replacing the four little screws a lot easier.

On the topic of Dirk, isn't he the only person who has positive proof of hitting the rev limiter in 5th gear?
