MG MGF Technical - gearbox whine question

...when changing down from 3rd to 2nd at a reasonably high rev range to enter a corner there is a noticible gearbox whine. Is this normal for the Honda box or the start of something horrible?

13k miles 1.8i - only started noticing it now I'm enjoying the corners more! (Warranty just finished)

Have a check of the gearbox oil level. This is known to be low on some cars already at delivery and on older cars with leaks around shaft-seals can make it even worse.

Cheers Carl, I'll have a check of the level. No oil on the floor though. Presumably you don't think it should whine at all?

Hi again,
no,not really . But have seen some complaints on "the other side", i.e. the Lotus Elise board about this. Seems to vary from car to car... The Honda box should be rather bullet proof. Not much in the archive except the reverse gear problem that in fact isnīt much of a problem - more anoying when it happends and one have onlookers ;).

Can someone tell a thicko like me how to check the gearbox oil level?

I was going to ask the same question, then thought, "silly me, I'm sure it's on Dieter's site". I checked - although there are lots of useful pics none actually shows where you check the oil level. in any case I suspect you need to put the car on a lift.

Or is there a way you can see it from under the car without lifting it?

I have also discovered my gearbox whines a bit (more than it used to) so would like to check the oil level. If I give it to the crap dealer of mine I know they will say "we checked, the level is OK" even if they didn't and it isn't.

Thanks in advance for any help
