MG MGF Technical - Goodyear Eagle Touring NCT3 - uneven tyre wear

1996 N Reg 1.8i. Was surprised to find the other day that my front tyres were worn right down to the steel lining on the inside of both front tyres, outside theres still about 3mm left possibly. Its 20K since they've been replaced.

Having checked the archives this is nothing new apparently, its actually nothing new for me since I once had a Sierra which did the exact same thing.

However I am going to fit some Eagle F1s on my 15" wheels to see how they get on and was wondering if anybody else has had the same experience.

Cheers,
Mark.

This tyre wear has nothing to do with the tyre maker ;)

The front tracking angles will be out of specs at your car.
Due to wrong ride height which has influence on the track values or due to worn bushes.

I suggest to let the ride height correct at first before you fit new tyres.

As Dieter says,

Check the ride height is correct first. If you have it adjusted allow it to settle for a day and then get the tracking checked. I set mine at 10mins toe in at the front but most settle for 5mins toe in. The manual states 5 mins toe OUT which (in my humble opinion is a misprint!).

Mark,

I just fitted new tyres to my car. The old ones seemed to have "normal" wear. However, I decided to have the tracking checked. Some of the guys from CSMGF recommended CLCM Autotyre at 11 Bankhead Drive, Sighthill Industrial Estate, Edinburgh (0131 453 1023). I was surprised the tracking on my rear offside wheel was way out. Remember that the F needs four wheel alignment done so it's not a case of popping down to Kwik Fit. Total cost was £47. I got the work done late Friday Morning and went for a run down to Melrose, Selkirk and returned home via Peebles. Combination of new tyres and tracking seems to have made the car handle a lot better (old tyres were original NCT-3s). By the way, I fitted Toyo Proxies on the recommendation of some of the members on this Board along with other "F"ers that I know. £220 for four 205/50 x 15 from Jim Dickson of Cumbernauld Village - lot cheaper than F1s.

If you're interested in meeting other members of this board from Central Scotland why not come along to the CSMGF Outing next Sunday (see seperate thread).

Thanks for the info, I will get the tracking checked and check the ride height myself. Unfortunately I have just got the F1s fitted to the front tonight so it will be in retrospect.

David which bulletin board is the thread in you refer to.

Cheers,
Mark.

Mark,

It's in the MGF General part of this Board - "Central Scotland MGF / TF - February Day Out" I think.

Drop me an e-mail if you want more info. Leigh Reid who posts on this Board comes from Edinburgh and I think that he might be there on Sunday. Alistair McLeod is not too far from you either. If I recall it's Livingstone that he comes from.

More on that tyre wear problem @ http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/tyrewear.htm

Hope that helps Mark - it's certainly a solvable problem!

>tracking on my rear offside wheel was way out.

Me too David, IIRC correctly. As for tyres, I'm shod with Bridgestone RE720's, from mytyres.co.uk (or .net, can't rememer) (fitted by CLCM above).

A very competent tyre, and has provided amazing levels of grip. Unfortunately pushed 'em a bit too far on Monday and nearly ended up in a wall after the back end flipped out. No idea how I managed to recover it. Actually, no real idea how it happened in the 1st place.

Watch it out there, especially when it's icy.

Guys,

just out of interest how much does it cost to have the ride height adjusted?

Mike, if you are lowering it yourself, then it's free.

If you want the car raised, you should be able to get a back street garage to do this for you for the cost of a couple of pints at your local.
