MG MGF Technical - Goodyear tyre choices

I know this has been asked before but could someone kindly remind me about changing Eagle F1 tyres.

My current tyres are GS-D2 and the nearest replacement these days (on my tyres.co.uk) are GS-D3. The variable specification that seems to have changed is that my wearing tyres are 92W whereas the GS-D3 tyres are 86W. I've forgotten what this stands for and does it matter that they're different? I'd rather change like-for-like as far as possible and not get into the merits of other brands.

Thanks in advance.
John

Don't mix 2s and 3s, i think it's to do with the strength of the sidewalls. When my local tyre place changed my worn rear GS-D2s with GS-D3s the car wandered all over the road, but after changing the fronts to GS-D3 it was back to normal. Even with all 4 tyres matching there was a considerable settling in period before they felt completely right

Thanks for your comment.

That is precisely what I planned to do. The two rears need replacing but the fronts have a lot of life left yet. So is the advice to change to 3s all round even if that means changing the rears rather early? Seems an expensive option.

Is there an alternative, keeping the Eagle F1 3s on the front and changing to a different brand entirely on the rears? That doesn't sound right either!
John

My experience with GS-D2 and GS-D3 was when preparing to go on a tour to Switzerland and Spain, I found a slash in a rear D2. I had no alternative but to put D3s on the rear. They gave some uncertainty with higher speed driving but on my return, I had the tracking set up and adjusted the pressures then had no further problems.
I have used My-Tyres for winter tyres for the Astra but find their prices for the MG plus fitting to be more than my local dealer.

John, what sizes are you looking for? As far as I know the only GSD2 size that was nigh-on impossible to get was the 195/45 16", but apparently due to demand Goodyear have produced another batch. The 215/40 16" still seem to be available, albeit not from all distributors. Goodyear's outlet chain are HiQ, worth checking with a branch near you as you may find they can supply like-for-like.
Mike Hankin

Ah, but HiQ sell at Goodyear RRps, about 35% higher than your local dealer for the same tyre !!

If you can change like for like, do it, if not change all four. GS-D2s are still available if you look hard enough

I ordered 4 new GS-D2s last week and they arrived next day. The tyre fitter had no bother getting them what-so-ever.

I have a set of GS-D2's from a spare set of wheels I bought recently. All have approx. 5mm of tread. Sizes are 2 x 195/45/16 and 2 x 215/40/16. I was going to put them on ebay at £120 for the set if anyone is interested before I put them up.

Regards.

My local dealer replaced my rear GSD2s with GSD3s and the car was all over the place (at the time, I didnt know the difference between GSD2 and GSD3 so didnt question it). When I complained, they have replaced them with GSD2s free of charge and all is now OK, so there are some GSD2s out there. I would suggest trying to get the GSD2s if you can.
Matt

Matt, welcome to the 'we've been brown trousered by dealer-fitted F1 tyres' brigade... Rear steer isn't a nice thing, is it!

I'm just in the process of buying a set of GSD2s.
The tyre place can get the 195s next day but there is a 2-3 day wait to get the 215s in.
When the tyre fitter rang the warehouse to check stock, they said there is no problem getting GSD2s in either size, and they even told the fitter that that no other tyre should be used on my car other than the GY GSD2, or I will crash LOL.
Nice to know there are still some clued up tyre suppliers out there.

FYI there were £87 each for the fronts and £85 each for the rears inc valves, fitting and balancing. (wasn't charged for tyre disposal though as they are going on new rims)

As for MGR dealers, I wouldn't buy tyres from one ever again after my local dealer recomended I fitted a pair of £40 remoulds to the rear of my other TF160 after they discovered a nail in both rear tyres during its first service.

I got GSD2 fitted in feb from mitcheldever who gave me the option of either d2 or d3 but recommended d2 although was replacing a set of d3. These where the 215s.

The cost for 2 was from memory about £145 all in.
