MG MGF Technical - Greenstuff

Has anyone had experience of greenstuff brake pads, are they noticeably better than standard?

Well, i tried greenstuff pads and found them to be very poor indeed. I have recently replaced them with mintex ( as suggested my Mike Satur), the braking efficiency and performance is so much better. I have the pads in the back of my boot ( Hardly used --> only @ 3000mls wear) you are more than welcome to have them.

Hi Nigel,

I found the GS pads to be a little better than standard - they didn't have the tendency to 'glaze' in slow London traffic, and they also had the benefit of not generating much in the way of brake dust :o)

But I do a fair number of sprints and track days (the latter in particular proved to paste the poor old pads), so changed to Mintex pads (in my case, the awsome 1177s). When I changed the pads, I noticed that the pad material had started to crack and chip off - although there was plenty of 'meat' left despite 10k miles. I found the black stuff pads however to be much inferior to standard pads both in retardation and life span terms.

I changed from standard to Greenstuff pads, then to Mintex and now I'm back on greenstuff.
The Mintex had fantastic initial bite but the overall stopping power was not that much better than the greenstuff.
I found the original greenstuff pads very poor because I didn't change the discs at the same time.

I changed to greenstuff about a month ago and they seem more reassuring to me. The braking is better butd probably more importantly, it is more even and predictable than with the MGR pads. Also seems to be much less brake dust on the alloys. They don't cost much more than MGR pads.

However, I don't do any trackdays 'n' stuff, so I can't say how they cope with those.

I'd be intrested in taking the greenstuff pads off your hands....i've been thinking about changing my MGR ones but would welcome a trial run so to speak! Drop me an email and we can sort out a fee!

Anyone any idea if Mike do the Mintex 1177 ?
They don't appear on his site, but you could order them from B&G.

In theory you need a valid competition license as Mintex don't supply them to your normal punters.
I'm sure Techspeed can get them. Would be interested to know if B&G can get them *and* supply them.
Also watch out for disc wear. A small price to pay for the really good stopping power.

Yup, my discs are now in need of replacement - 18 months and 16k miles since they were last replaced.

High running costs is the price that we pay for excellent performance (although interestingly, I was getting pad-fade at Silverstone last week).

I'm bound by sprint regs with regard to rotor specification - but if I were going for performance without this restriction, then I'd probably go for one of the big-disc kits - MG/ AP/ HiSpec/ Mike Satur would all be on my shopping list :o) Not sure yet which I'd go for preferentially... If I had the money, may be HiSpec front and rear :o)

Hi,

I just Changed my front disks to the EBC Turbo grooved brake discs, and put green pads on all round. I also got braided hoses fitted while I was at it.... initially i didnt notice much difference... but once the pads had warmed up a little the stopping was great... I feel a lot more confident about the braking now...

I have greenstuff pads and their grooved and drilled discs and am completely happy with them - they got a good test when a tourist(presumably) stepped out into the street looking the wrong way in front of the car in front of me: the car in front would have hit the woman if she hadn't jumped out of the way, and I was certain I was going into the back of the other car: came to a standstill with a good two feet to spare. No hint of ABS kicking in either.

That was as much recommendation as I'd ever need that I'd bought the right things.

I had EBC Greenstuff put on all round a few months ago, and they are fantastic once warm, especially on winding roads that require lots of braking...no fade, lots of bite. But, it is pointless replacing the pads without having the discs properly machined, and it is very important to bed them in as recommended by the manufacturer (easy driving not exceeding 80 to 100 km/h for about 200 km of travel).
