MG MGF Technical - handbrake adjustment

Hi all
Has anyone got any advice on handbrake adjustment for our mgf 1997 vvc.
I had some great step by step instructions on various jobs to be done a few months ago (with pics) and was wondering if anyone had some advice on the handbrake.
Ours is just about useless now so it just has to be done by ME or the local garage.

I take it you mean the handbrake doesn't hold the car?
The handbrake is auto adjusting, either you are out of pads or a cylinder is sized so you are only braking one wheel.

I had this problem on my '97 MPi. It was caused by wear in the handbrake actuator at the caliper itself and I had to fit a new nearside caliper unit - apparently they are not serviceable.

It's not wear as such, but binding of the mechanism

you can free them, but the problem will come back in a couple of months (enough to get you thru an MOT). New calipers are just under £100.

Thanks Will/Andy
I had a look in the arhive section on here and found what i was looking for.
There IS adjustment if you take out the little storage compartment near the handbrake inside the car and using a 12m ring spanner you can take up the slack of the cable, leaving a good brake of two notches(instead of several before)(cost=zero)

Have you looked at the disk and the pads. If they have glazed over then you find that your handbrake will not hold the car. I have just experienced this on my car. I always leave the car in gear - but on starting with clutch in the car runs backwards.

Solution - have your disks skimmed and change to greens stuff pads

By for now
