MG MGF Technical - Hardtop-soft top

Can people confirm 2 me that when going from say hard top to soft and visa versa you always need some adjustments made to windows and such each time.

Thanks
Gary

I don't know, I hope no.

I bought my tf in 3/2003 and I haven't put out hard-top, now

No this is not the case. I've used a hardtop for two winters now, and as long as the windows were correctly adjusted for the softop (as mine were) there is no need for any adjustments.

I agree with Robert - you should not have to adjust the windows.

Have a look at details regarding seals on my site at http://members.aol.com/apttony/

Good luck

I see what your saying but looks like person who had my car before me only ever used the hardtop so car was setup for the hard top, now i want to use the soft top its way out. Is this just mine or would this be consistant. Anyway the rear screens had it as it was folded down for so long, the seals are hanging off so i think im gunna get a new Mk2 hood fitted properly once and for all.

Gazza

Nope, you need not.
Change sills to the new spec parts and later the HT rear side clamps if still not pleased with the reworked result.

Another site.

Key links on top for HT conversion.

btw you will find (nearly) all curreent availiable technical stuff about MGF from the BBS webmasters if you try http://www.mgcc.de/mgf search engine. The same individual tool as on my main site and MGF front end of this BBS.
It crawls in monthly sequence along app 970 documents of app 20 silly webmasters and has app 300.000 words in a quick search Index file.
:). You need to know keywords on what you're looking for mainly in English or some in German, though. Not perfect, but who cares.

One other thing to consider is that the side windows were changed by MGR at some point so if you have a MK1 hard top with seals to fit MK1 windows and you have a MK2 windows (slightly smaller) then there could well be an alignment problem.

I never have to readjust my windows because of hardtop removal - and that is after 7 years of swapping.

The windows should be aligned to the soft top and then the hard top should fit correctly. Naturally this never seems to be the case, but as Ted has said it may be a question of fine tuning the roof and fitting new MK2 seals. I fitted these seals a couple of months ago and the roof now fits correctly. Mike is a good source of these seals. You might also think about replacing the windsreen seal too. This was made thicker. You don't say how old your car is but I am assuming it is an early(ish) one.

Yeah thanks guys, tim and ted's comments were what i was looking for. I think the people who had the car before me never took the hard top off but didnt get it fitted right either as ive had a lot of leaks and such, but hey my problems could be all over tomorrow as ive decided to get a Mk2 soft top fitted which by all accounts is 100 times better and its getting done by people who care! so hopefully might not even need my hardtop anymore so i could have one for sale soon.

Gary
Gazza

no adjustment needed if it it is right in the first place, but make sure you fit your hard top properly!
