MG MGF Technical - Has anyone lowered the seats in a MGF

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has been able to lower the drivers seat of a MGF. I am 6ft tall and stuggles when my foot is on the clutch turning the wheel. I have found a company who will do it for about £200 but i would rather do it myself. I am a good mechanic and can weld, before i head into stripping the seat i thought i would ask the question. Cheers Stan

Thats fantastic! How much do you want for her? Will a week sort it out?

Stan, I am 6 ft 4inch so I needed to lower mine. I took the cutter to the 2 inch high platform on which the seat was mounted and removed it. I then welded four "threaded inserts" into the floor pan where required and used a race seat mounted to those points. In order to maintain the sideways strength I welded in two cross bars from the inner sill into and through the centre tunnel so that any side impact forces would be partially transferred into the centre as designed. It was not an original idea of mine, it was first done I believe on the race prepared MGFs for the early series (and probably the late series as well) of One Make Racing. It took quite some time but worked very well in the end for me. The seat mounts held up well in a recent accident on the track so it confirmed that it was modified with sufficient structural and fabrication integrity.

Thats a great peace of info, thanks. My wife is shorter than me so i ideally need to keep the adjustment forward and back. Although thinking about it she wouldn't be able to drive the car if the seat was fixed for me :-)..........

I am 6 feet plus and have not found a need to lower the seat BUT you can get a set of replacement springs/stretchers from aftermarket suppliers such as Newton or Brown & Gammon and they lower the sitting position a little.

Also the later *F* came with an adjustable steering column - silly question I know but have you checked yours?

Attached picture shows an early F. Adjustable column arrived at the 2000 model year with a host of other changes including the updated interior.

I have the Newton springs in my F seats however did not notice any difference. I wonder if there is any other uncomplicated way to make the structure of the original seats lower.

Try Mr Dixon?

Any way to cut transversally the frame of the seat to make it thinner?
Ralph Benning

It is possible to modify the seat frames to provide a lower seating position, whilst retaining the structural integrity of the seat. Please see http://www.vehiclehandlingsolutions.com/page2.htm for more information.
