Rick, if you can hold on for a few weeks the MGF Register should be offering an exchange scheme for re-silvered reflector bowls, certainly cheaper than a complete new unit.
Mike Hankin

By re silvered is that a complete new lens ie the plastic deflector as well as the chrome surrounds??? can anyone explain???

The re-silvering is a re-application of the mirror finish on just the reflector bowl surfaces, i.e. the bowl behind the dipped beam lens & the main beam bowl. The silver insert that sits in front of the reflector bowls is purely cosmetic, it doesn't play any part in the beam. Many people spray that in body colour in the Trophy style, or chrome effect paint.

Unfortunately, the Register can't administer this scheme - I think that the BBS is probably going to have to do this as some kind of self-help arrangement :o(

Anyone know how long the resilvering takesand how much it costs how difficult etc????? Can only add my xr4x4 to my insurance for periods of 28days...... Prob gonna need more than that if this cold weather comes!!!!

MG Service Centre offers an exchange service - recondition lamps for your old milky lamps. Half the cost of new lamps - only problem - they are based in Christchurch, NZ. If interested email Lawrie at mgservicecentre@xtra.co.nz for more details.
He does about 6 pairs a time.
Dennis

Rick, there's typically a 7-10 day turnaround, cost around £30 per unit plus £5 shipping. Do you need one side only or a pair?

Mike Hankin

I recently scraped through an MOT with poor beam pattern on one side (the other was recently replaced following a crash). The garage let it go after they replaced the bulb at £8 but confirmed that it would not next year.

I would be very interested in finding somewhere that can re chrome the lens if any contacts. Also the glass in front is quite milky, can this be improved or replaced and does this also affect the beam pattern?

Timothy

think its gonna need the pair cant see the lights at all at night from inside the car having to use full beam where i can and will be on night vision goggles soon!!!!:)

The glass can be cleaned up, if the milkiness is not too bad - plus, usually, it is the reflector itself that is at fault.

Having said all that, the glass can be readily replaced once the lamp unit is disassembled. Finding a replacement is rather like trying to track down replacement reflector units - extremely difficult. :o(
