MG MGF Technical - Heated washer jets (again)

Every year without fail I wait until the middle of winter, find my washer jets freeze and decide I'll buy some heated ones. And then never do. This year's no exception, except that I've moved house recently and the spot on the drive where the car lives over night appears to be at least 10 below at all times during winter! This morning wasn't fun.

I've always had trouble with the jets on my car - one nozzle is forever blocking and they only give out a pathetic drizzle most of the time anyway - so some new ones probably wouldn't go amiss anyway. Some questions:

- Are the MGR heated jets any better in terms of not blocking up, spray pattern, etc?
- How warm do the jets get? Do they help with defrosting the screen at all?
- How much difference does removing the non-return valve make? Can you get to it without removing the plastic liner under the bonnet?
- Finally, the kit used to be about £40 but it's now over £70! Has anyone seen it cheaper?

I have the heated washer kit fitted since 1998 and had completely forgotten about it until you reminded me, so it obviously works. The spray pattern is no different to normal, ie good enough to clean with the help of the wipers, but not brilliant. I have tried defrosting the screen with the washers but it has never proved entirely effective, so now I sit waiting for about 5 mins while the engine warms up.

Sorry I can't help with the alternative method of whipping out the non-return valve, but it sounds worth trying while the current cold spell lasts.

IIRC the no return valve is on the bonnet (although obviously the underside of the bonnet)

Thanks, guys. Have just ordered the kit to hopefully arrive before Christmas so I'll try to get round to fitting it before the New Year. Think it's worth taking out the non-return valve at the same time?

If you go onto eBay there are always heated jets from VWs, etc for less than a tenner! However, given how cold it is outside and therefore how dis-inclined I'll be to mess around during the Christmas break I thought I may as well get the proper kit. I would think the only problems with another car's jets would be the shape/fitting to the bonnet and if it had a special connector.

Anyone needs a new genuine MGF heated washer jet (1 only) email me at poigravesATaoldotcom. Free to first comer. I will post when I get back to work on Wednesday.
Just clearing out some old car stuff and came across it.
