MG MGF Technical - Heater Fan problem

The heater fan doesn't work on position 1 but it works on all the other settings. Has anybody any idea whether it will be the switch, or something else?

Thanks

See for the heater resistor pack, located at the fan box.

One of the three resistors will be burnt. The archives are full with instructions on the matter.

Hi Paul,
Do you have aircon fitted to your car?
I have made a couple of circuits to electronically control the heater fan motor. One for aircon and one for cars without (obviously). You DO NOT access to the resistor pack at all. You remove the plug from behind the heater switch and wire in the electronic circuit. I've posted info on the mgf register site in the classified as I can make them to order for anyone wishing to go down this route.
With aircon fitted, it makes a much simpler job as you don't have to de-pressurise (a specialist job)and then remove the aircon unit to get at the resistor pack.
Hope this is of use.

Thanks for these answers my car has no air con, are the resistors easy to get at and changeable. If not I will have to go down the electronic route

Thanks

This is an easy replacement on a non-air con car. See http://www.apttony.co.uk/ scroll down the list on the left of the screen and you will find what you need.
The replacement resistor pack costs a bit under £30.

Hve just ordered a pack on E Bay for just over a fiver. What a bargain

Thanks for all your help

I also got a pack off ebay and fitted them 2 weeks ago. It can be a little awkard getting the pack out but not that difficult. You will have to solder the new ones in coils in. Make a note which goes where before removing.

I have a 2004 TF wil airconditioner and fan not working on low speed. I note that willyphixitt has an electronic control to wire into the fan switch. Does anybody know how to contact willyphixitt?

mine has been broken for years, I guess I've learned to live with it.

I have a Bill Nixon electronic fan controller. It is a permanent fix to the resistor pack method of controlling fan speed and I can highly recommend it. If stuck, I do know Bill's email address, but he will probably identify here how he wants to be contacted.

Jeff, thank you for that, could you pass on Bill's email address or ask him to contact me on bob.beck3@bigpond.com

Thank you, BB

Bob, I've emailed Bill Nixon with your details and suggested he makes contact with you direct.

The willyfixit unit fits inside the passenger footwell, behind the panel with the light.

It's a self contained box that connects to the rotary fan switch - you modify the wiring slightly which effectively takes the fan resistors out of circuit. The willyfixit box sends voltage pulses to the fan motor - its the frequency of the pulses that control how fast that motor turns, according to the fan switch position.

Actually it's a better method for the motor, as it isn't being sent low voltages (as per the resistor method) and there are no resistor coils to overheat and burn out. It is a very neat idea and highly recommended for all cars, with or without air-con fitted.

I've attached a picture of my footwell with the unit in place (it's the aluminium plate retained by a single screw). On my unit I cut flush two protruding threads, but Bill may have changed the design within the 14 months since I bought one from him.

I know this is an old thread and that I was previously referring to a 2014 TF, however I sold the car shortly after the last effort to contact Bill Nixson. I now have a 2005 TF (with airconditioning) with the same problem with the low speed on the fan switch. I would still like to be able to contact him to purchase the box that he has developed, can anybody help me contact Bill Nixson?

Just to let everybody know, I have made contact with Bill Nixson and one of his units is going to be posted next week.
