MG MGF Technical - Help! Coolant disappeared

I purchased a 2000 MGF 1.8i Non VVC 3 months ago. I have had a call from the wife today who said that on the way home there was steam coming from the rear of the car! Investigation has shown the expansion tank to be empty! I checked the car over this morning and everything was OK. It is only 4 mile to work and this is in town so no fast driving. Since buying the car i have found a receipt for a new head and repairs due to the car overheating. As such I have read up on the problems within this forum and have checked regularly for any tell tale signs. As yet nothing until today. The car is not used everyday but mainly on a weekend.
I never take it out without checking over first!!

Check your oil for mayo, have you put in more water yet to look for any sign of a split hose?
And was there a guarantee with that receipt?

Hi!

Might help if you look at my thread "in hot water"
as I am having similar problems. Head gasket replaced, warped inlet manifold replaced, etc., etc.,
but still overheating and losing coolant.

Fellow forum members have been helpful in coming up
with possible solutions. Good luck

Could I just add for the benefit of anyone new to this Forum that one of the best investments you can make is a coolant level warning system. If you have a burst hose or a leak somewhere it will warn you before any serious damage is done to the engine. If the coolant system runs empty then the engine will overheat and repairs could be costly.

Thanks for the replies! I have checked for the dreaded "Mayo" and the oil is fine, no trace of coolant in there. My wife has looked at the receipt and a new rad was fitted as well at the time. I will check for guarantee on work carried out. The car is still under warrenty just! so its going back! Unfortunately the garage it was purchased from has not done the repair work!
Thanks again
Will keep you posted

One of your first checks should be the fuse for the radiator fan and then if ok check the fan is comming on. The fuses are known to blow and suggestions on here are that you fit a higher rated fuse.
Dave

Good news!! The radiator had a hole in it and after pressure test and some wrangling with the garage, as the rad was not covered on the warrenty, they went halves on a new one plus fitting and antifreeze were free! Result. I will keep my eye on the other things mentioned and will check the fuse. Heres hoping everything is OK now.
Thanks again for the advice
