MG MGF Technical - Help! Driver's window won't go down

I knew DIY was a bad idea.

After arriving at work with a wet ar*e this morning, I found the window wasn't aligned against the rubber sealing. Tried the window, it moves about 5mm up/down then stops. Picked up a new window stop from B&G at lunchtime, got home, stripped off door panel and speaker no problem, but could only find a very small orange bit of plastic which I presume is part of the broken window stop. I assume something is fouling the mechanism as I can see no sign of the rest of the original window stop. With the door panel removed, when I attempt to lower the window the interior of the door flexes, as though something is being pushed against it - this does not look normal!

My problem now is that I cannot see what is the cause of the jam (I'm guessing the remains of the window stop), nor does it seem to be physical possible to replace the door panel with the window fully up, at least not for 1 person. So it's now dark, the car is locked outside with the interior door panel and all its screws on the passenger seat, and I don't fancy driving to work tomorrow with a stripped out door panel!

Any suggestions as to how best get at the window mechanism or find out why it won't lower?

Maybe a part of the window stop has fallen in the window rail. If it is small enough ( or odd enough)it might get stuck between rail and slider.

Mystery solved in the clear light of day - somehow the window stop has managed to get ABOVE the stopper fixed into the door, and will not go back below it. Time to hunt down a ratchet wrench to remove it...

Ed,

You want to make sure you get the newer variety of replacement window stops. Those old orange ones are awful and everyone has experienced a failure with those. Mine went a while ago and I have replaced with the newer variety which are much more solid.
Well here's a coincidence. Do you live or work in Sandy. I work in the offices above Budgens. If you need a hand with anything - drop me an email.

Gordon,

Thanks for the offer, I've already recruited some colleagues to assist with the panel replacement at lunchtime :)

I did get the newest window stop (from B&G yesterday - despite them almost selling me a windstop by accident, bit of a price difference!) - it actually looks as though my car already has the new type fitted, but I'll probably replace it anyway.

I work at the RSPB, just down the road towards Potton!

OK panic over but a new problem arises - the problem is not with the window not going down, but with it going too far up! Forgive my technical ignorance, but what tells the window when to stop going up? A physical block? Some electrical gubbins? Whatever it is is not doing it's job. Until service time arrives, mental note not to raise the window with the door open!

Ed,

It's been a while but I thought that was the job of the top windowstop. There are a whole heap of adjustments on the window to adjust movements sideways, upwards, laterally etc. They are a nightmare to get right and you end up going round in circles - adjust one and it puts the others out etc. However, I thought the one easy one to do was the top stop. Take a quick look at http://www.mgfworld.co.uk/windowstop.htm. This might give you some help. If you've still got a problem by Monday, drop us a line and I'll pop up at lunchtime - gdickman@ntlworld.com
