MG MGF Technical - help with dead centre

hi iv got a mgf trophy 160 k series vvc and im in the middle of removing the head. iv removed inlet and exhust manifolds and now i need to remove the head. the problem is i need to set up the fly wheel and pullys etc befor i remove it. i have no manual and cant find anything on the net. any help or links plz.

The cam belt pulleys have alignment markers on them, these should be opposite one another (at their closest point) before removing the cam belt. Once aligned use a cam locking tool (draper sell a suitable one for the K-series) to keep them in position. This will give you a fixed point from which to work. This will set the pistons 90 degrees BTDC (halfway up the bore) which is a safe place to be. For belt and braces I would suggest locking the flywheel too since you don't want to be moving the crank with the head off :0

I'm sure you'll find Dieter's site helpful:
http://www.mgfcar.de/hgf/change.htm

And Rob Bell's is a mine of information too:

Good luck,
I'll be going this in a few weeks time too.

Give me a shout when you need me Tim :o)

James, check out the cam belt change video on http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/engines/index.htm - should provide much of the information you're after :o)
Rob Bell

if you look at the crank the pully has a notch in it, align this with the long line on the plastic cam belt cover.

If you have already removed the drive belt pully then you will find two dots on the cam belt pully which perform the same job.
Will Munns

Be careful with the marks on the crank pulley, the notch you want is the one on the back flange of the pulley not the more obvious one on the front.

Tim

Err hold on Tim, the rear notch is to align to TDC, not 90 BTDC....

The mark on the front of the oulley should align with the embossed line on the centre of the bottom cambelt cover, then the engine is at 90BTDC.

Oops! Thanks for the correction Dave.
