MG MGF Technical - hg on itts way out ?

A friend of mine put me onto this site.
my wifes mgf 1998 1.8i 44,000 mls had loss of coolant 2 days ago. after reading other threads i've chaecked the oil for mayo & coolant for oil all good. I found the coolant cap to be leaking air, & replaced it. however today there was slight evidence of a leak somewhere around the themostat casing, is there a gasket on this or maybe could the casing be at fault.
i was monitoring coolant today & am still doing so. it appears it may have leaked whilst engine cooling down. will Know more later.
appreciate any thoughts.

How much? Do you know where it came from?

I started to experience losing coolant through the expansion cap (could here it quietly bubbling away to itself after a good run). Thought it may be the cap on the way out.

However was taking the car to Mike S and he suggested I check the radiator (was wanting anything that tends to go at 5 years checked). Rad was shot (2 bottom rows of cooling fins missing, as seen through the front bumper), and was causing the engine to run hotter than it should. Rad & coolant pipes were replaced and not had any coolant leak problems since.

HTH,

Leigh

p.s. check the rad, under floor coolant pipes for leaks. Might be easier to do this on a ramp though.
Leigh

Difficult to properly inspect the rad in situ - but sensible advice there Leigh.

Guy - keep monitoring the situation; I suspect that the new cap will have solved the problem, and the residues you've found aren't anything to worry about.

When you topped up the coolant, did you bleed the system at the same time?

True, however bottom 2 rows of fins missing was a good clue to it's state! Wish I'd taken a photo of it now. Bubbling is actually better described as a hissing.

Water pump is apparently bad for leaks too.

Hi Guy

Hows it going, any update on the coolant leak?

Seems to be rather to many HGF's around at the moment, is it the weather??

John Manson

>is it the weather??

For sure. I the rain most stay in the garage ;)
Dieter K.

Higher outside temps. = closed heater matrix = HGF ?
In many cases probably the straw that breaks the camels back... I always keep the heater knob slightly open in all cases. Leaves a slight circulation thru the system - but not enough to be irritating hot even on summer days.
