Hi,I had head gasket replaced on my mgf 6 mth ago, since then car was fine, checked oil and coolant every day.Today I just went to start it,as did not drive for 3 days ,checked oil and notice some mayo.Is head gasket gone again?Afraid to drive it tomorrow to do any damage.Any advise of what to do as garage will be closed until next week?

Hi Ingrid,

It's quite common to get a little condensation which causes a few small signs of mayo in the oil, especially if the car is not being used much.

What's the coolant like in the header tank. If that has no signs of oil and th elevel has not dropped, then it might just need a run to burn off the condensation.

Hi,thanks for all advice.Just checked oil and coolant after driving car for about 40min,there is still small signs of mayo on a dipstick, can't see any signs of oil in the coolant, but also looks very little coolant left(I did put some more now),seems no signs of overheating or leaking.

Hi Ingrid,

as for lost coolant and top-up see at Rob's site about the correct level.
Sketch on the bottom.

Just checked coolant again and is none left, must be leaking somewhere, can't see(raining all day).I'v done bleeding in October, car overheated in a traffic a little bit then and seemed some of coolant was gone, but then was fine until now.Not sure if it's ok to drive it now?Any chance that is not a gasket gone(just had it done in June, was 1600 euros)?
Ingrid

Dooooh ! That's no good news.
I'd not do any engine start attempt unless I'm sure that no coolant went into any of the cylinders.
(Could be checked by removing the spark plugs)

Majo _and_ coolant loss means usually:
Let the car tow to a good workshop for a head gasket repair :(
And it sounds that may be the repair in June wasn't ... errrm, ... good enough. Speak to them and ask what could have happend. May be you can complain that works.

After having head gasket done, I was told head could not be skimmed as it had been on a previous hgf. (No mention in full s. history! The garage told me It might last 1 month, 1year. This was a good garage scheme member as well. Water and oil so far spotless. Next time I intend to go for recon. engine, with guarantee and cut out the guesswork . 2 hgfs approx pays for an engine almost.
