MG MGF Technical - HGF and Crap Dealer

For a number of weeks I've been suffering from slight coolant loss, the cars been back to the dealers and they've found nothing wrong with it.

I pulled the dipstick this morning and I've got coffee mayo. The dealer has had the car in 3 times to try to find the fault, and has failed to do so.

Should he have spotted this? The car is still under warranty, so surely it would have been in their own best interest?

I'm a touch miffed about this

Colin,
I presume a "touched miffed" means "b****y furious" - because that's what I would have been. The dealer should certainly have known about HGF as there has been enough publicity. Create a big fuss and make sure it's fixed under warranty.

Your understanding of my mood is spot on:):)

I've had 9 months of endless problems since I bought the car, 98R VVC. I've had the suspension fixed, radiator and exhaust replaced, a rattle which took 4 return visits to solve, tracking redone, 2 tyres replaced and cam belts changed, and all but the tyres covered by the warranty. I think its the best £200 I've ever spent:)

My patience has now worn thin tho

I find this a bit strange if it really is HGF. Once the gasket fails, then it doesn't take long for that failure to become catastrophic (a few days at best).
If they take the head off, I'd ask them to investigate the cause (cylinder liner height?); if they just replace the gasket then the problem may return.
Sounds like your dealer is working hard (if unsuccessfully) to resolve the problems - I'd recommend leaving the car with them for as long as they need it.
Do you know any history of the car ?
Your dealer should be able to get the warranty history (but may not want to discuss it !)

Good Luck

mmmm my impression of the dealer is somewhat less charitable than yours Steve.

I get no feedback from them, only get to deal with the receptionist who simply reads the job card, which basically says its fixed, or its not fixed.

service manager basically doesnt seem to be ar*ed, relationships have now deteriorated to the point of no return
Colin Ashworth

It appears your relationship with your dealer is pretty much dead. The lack of communication is unforgiveable. What plans have you got for servicing the car when the warranty expires ?
Steve

when the warranty has expired I have to decide whether to make the trek to Mike Satur over the hills in Gods country, or try a local outfit who have started up recently under the name of northwest mgf, initial reports on here have been quite positive.

I've also decided to go after the dealer for costs, I am self employed so everytime there is a problem with the car it costs me at least 2 hours invoicable time. I probably wont get anywhere, but it will cost him in having to reply to my letters and I'm feeling quite vindictive at the moment.

On a +ve note I got the car back today, seems to be OK. When I asked exactly what they had done, the service girly said "oh we've replaced the head gasket"

thanks for that:(:(
