MG MGF Technical - HGF cause...

Are the plastic dowels the only cause of HGF? Or are there other factors?
mgf bloke

Nope, see other recent threads, see archives, get a real name.
Will Munns

OOOOOOH
JohnP

I can not imagine that Plastic Dowels will cause a head gasket failure - Steel Dowels being more rigid appear to be helping in preventing them.

Ted
Ted Newman

Will get out of the wrong side of bed today, huh?
Dilbert

Nope, just a little bored, it's not like there aren't any threads currently active without detailed information on this, try TF HGF.
And GET A REAL NAME
Will Munns

True.....good point
Dilbert

What a friendly welcome, Will. Much obliged.
mgf bloke

You're right mgf bloke - the causes of HGF in the MGF (and Lotus Elise) are much more than an inadequate elastomeric sealing bead on the gasket and the specification of plastic head locating dowels.

Rather than repeat all the theories (all of which are IMO sound) are listed here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/hgf_pages/HGF.htm

Hope that helps
Rob Bell

>What a friendly welcome, Will. Much obliged.

A look around some of the threads in any newsgroup is the first thing you should do when you get to a new forum. You obviously didn't bother doing this as there were two other threads talking about this already, one which apparently has someone who helped design the engine.

It is rude and annoying to repeat the same question again, and anyone who knows their stuff will not bother after a while because why should they when you can't?

Will
Will Munns

Yup....Will's definately having a 'bad hair day'
Dilbert

Rob:
Many thanks...since I don't have the omniscient qualities of someone like Will, your kind and polite assistance is much appreciated.

Will:
Taking this a bit seriously aren't you?
mgf bloke

>Wasn't really the end of the world was it?

I don't remember treating it like it was

>I don't feel there was any need for your reaction, that's all.

Which was to tell you to read some of the other threads, yes the answer was short, but as I said, why should I waste a lot of time explaining HGF, it's causes etc when you hadn't had the curtosy of at least reading the top two thrted titles?

>I believe you admitted you were bored,
I don't remember that

>so if that's the reason you had a go at me,
No if I were bored I would have answered you with a longer post.

>I will be willing to accept an apology.
You might have to wait some time, I stand by what I said

>then that's okay too.
thats good :-)

Will

Will Munns

Will - some of your spelling is as bad as Meagre's.....
Bob

Hmmm. mgf bloke, bob and dilbert appear to have the same ip address...
Leigh

Could well have Leigh - if all three use the same ISP........and it wouldn't be the first time either.
Colin

Sorry to disappoint you chaps, but I'm not sure who Bob and Dilbert are.
mgf bloke

>Will - some of your spelling is as bad as Meagre's.....
Yep, but I talk less sh*te
Will Munns

Will...I notice you didn't quote my admission that I made a mistake by not reading the other posts in the forum.

I think you have made a bit of a tit of yourself by taking this quite as far as you have.

If you didn't want to "waste a lot of time explaining HGF" then why didn't you just ignore my post? I'm sure you've wasted more time with your petty digs.

And just for the record, Will...Yes you did admit you were bored, and I quote: "Nope, just a little bored"

There's no point replying again Will...I don't think I'll be returning to this forum again....unfortunately not as friendly as it used to be.

By the way, it's spelt: C-u-r-i-o-s-i-t-y

Goodbye all...thanks to anyone who was friendly
mgf bloke

>and I quote: "Nope, just a little bored"
As in bored by people asking the same question as is answered by THE TOP TWO OTHER THREADS ON THE SYSTEM,
_not_ bored as in bored by other things and lazing about on the net.

>I don't think I'll be returning to this forum again
This forum is a great place to learn about your car, but as with any forum, if you ask the same question again and again then people will get bored with you

>unfortunately not as friendly as it used to be.
So you've been here before?
So you've read all the previous posts on HGF?
So you _knew_ the answer to your own post?
So you are a troll?
Will Munns

The first time I used this board, was the first time I had used any board. I was unaware of the use of Archives etc and general BBS protocal. However everyone here was really helpfull, and treated me as a newcomer who was unfamiliar, rather than acusing me of being a lazy git who couldn't be bothered to check the archives/other threads.

I don't believe mgfbloke has been very fairly treated here, or given due consideration as potentially "new to the world of Bulletin Boards" Give him a break, I was, I liked it and I stayed.

Regards getting a real name, he may have given time, but I doubt he will now!

One can always just ignore a thread one does not, or cannot be bothered to help out with.

Sorry

Only just found out what a troll is....I resent the accusation that I am one.

Also, thanks for the support Paul.

Will says.......<< Which was to tell you to read some of the other threads, yes the answer was short, but as I said, why should I waste a lot of time explaining HGF, it's causes etc when you hadn't had the curtosy of at least reading the top two thrted titles? >>

Will...... dont feel obliged to reply to every question that is posted. That way your valuable time that you dont want to waste may be used in more beneficial ways.

Reading and replying to posts is voluntary. Or have you been given the mantle of replying to every post and being an unofficial BBS official ???

MGF bloke may well be a troll but I think your reaction would scare some of the new and silent readers away !

Rant over ;-)
D Jamieson

Here, here D Jamieson!

And for the record...I am NOT a troll!!

I am here like the rest of u because i have an MGF.

1996 1.8 MPi...anthracite....cream leather...broken Kenwood CD player!
mgf bloke

Sorry MGF Bloke It wasnt mean to read that you WERE a troll...it meant to read "that in some peoples views you may be" a troll LOL ;-)

IMO You had a valid gripe.

D Jamieson

Why must MGF Bloke get a name when Scarlet Fever doesn't need to?

It seems to be the case that SF has been here for ages, and so he can post under an assumed name, but new people must produce more forms of ID than is required to board an Eazyjet flight before they can post in peace, never mind be accepted as part of the south east dominated clique on this board.
Double

>Why must MGF Bloke get a name when Scarlet Fever doesn't need to?

Nope, Andy is called scarlet fever because people confuse him and the car (which is scarlet fever)
Will Munns

Why do people get them confused ?... Does he look like an MGF ?
D Jamieson

As Will says, there is a nice story behind the naming of Scarlet Fever.

This is a nice friendly BBS and it would be nice to know a real name behind the web name. What do we call you if we ever bump into you....? Pure practical reasons you see....

I'm glad you're finding the BBS a useful source of information.
tim woolcott

It is a little historical I suppose - when the *F* first came out and this BBS was launched we normally signed off with our Name, Car Registration Number and any nicknames we used, in those days there were so few of us that all information was gleaned and who knows we might have met each other somewhere.

As more and more people came on board and more and more postings were being made and our webmaster introduced a format with auto-sign-ins so the habit of signing off in full died out but one or two people were left using just their nickname and Scarlet Fever (or SF for short) is probably one of the last.

I agree that a lot of questions do get asked time and time again - especially by those who are new to the BBS.

Personally, I do try to answer these queries as honestly as possible, and will often point to related web links where the answer may be answered more fully, and with pictures - which simply not possible in this BBS format.

It may also be worth pointing out that the BBS knowledge base is not static - the 'collective' learns all the time - so answers to questions like "how are HGFs caused" change over time as new knowledge permeates into the collective consciousness. This also means that, sometimes, the answers that are thrown up by an archive search may be misleading or even incorrect - how can a Newbie be expected to shift the wheat from the chaff? Therefore, I don't really tire of reading/answering the same questions.

Well, unless someone asks another question on the best tyre!!! ;o) ;o) ;o) (Only joking!)

I did exactly the same thing as MGF bloke a month ago when my VVC had HGF. Luckily I was treated very nicely by everyone and had lots of very useful postings which I took heed of and happily thanks to Mike S my car is back on the road. I did not know about the archives and if I hadn't been welcomed I probably would have had a Rover gasket fitted and be waiting for my next HGF. Boys please be nice to each other and stop trying to score points. Lecture over :-)

Gaffer

A perfectly normal question for an MGF owner to ask.(at the start of the thread). A good reply would have been to point MGF Bloke in the direction of the appropriate threads. This is a BBS for questions to be asked on, and to receive friendly helpful advice. Is it not?

Hey youz Guys, listen up and get this: I've been accused many times of posing the same question ..... not here but, elsewhere. Good reason for reposing a question. So, for the benefit of those lacking sufficient width of vision, and there are many, be advised that things move on and that same question may receive a far better answer later. Why, because things are always changing and moving on. Answers given yesterday may now be completely outdated by far better ones today.

So, ask away ..... be you new or old like what I am ......:O)))))))
