MG MGF Technical - HGF Frequency

Well when my car was collected for its trip to the Garage I got talking to the driver. Seemed to know a lot about HGF. He reckoned that he collects 3 F's a week. So 3*50*how many drivers?

Hopefully the new one will not go but if your have an older F that has not gone yet, it will.

The short answer to your question is "outside of MGR, no one knows".

However, for some years now there has been an internet HGF statistics gathering site running, it does not claim to be accurate, but does provide a little insight into the scale of the problem and whether anything has been done about it - Check out the stats at:

Interesting, if a bit scary reading.

It relies entirely on people reporting HGF incedents though, the more reports are made, the more accurate it becomes.

Quite atrocious really!

a simple bit of redesign could knock this on the head for ever!

I don't know about this being simple, but arguably it has already been done. The 2003 spec engines carry the new pressure sensitive thermostat - see http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/hgf_pages/cooling_system_modifications.htm

If the problem was "simple" it would have been fixed long ago!

Met a bloke last night in the petrol station who had an F. Couldn't resist it and asked HGF yet ?

The answer yes at Christmas 28,000 miles.

I am sorry but these things are cursed with this problem.

1) Seemed to know a lot about HGF.
2) He reckoned that he collects 3 F's a week.

Is there any correlation between these two statements?

Extrapolating: 3 cars per week, 50 weeks per year, 50 MG Dealers, 8 years of production = 60,000 MGFs have had an HGF.

I'm really please I have one of the remaining 10,000 that haven't.

Having just collected mine back from the dealer this morning for HGF, in discussions with the service manager he mentioned that he sees around one possibly two cars a month on average. In fact he had another one waiting today when I picked mine up. Bearing in mind that this is semi-rural Gloucestershire if this were extrapolated nationally the figures will not be quite as high as JohnP suggests!!!

Well the guy that collected mine was from Roadrunner I think, the MG Dealer I use contract out collections. So possibly even more. But then I guess sales are not evenly spread, see a lot in the SE.

How many did they make? Even if half have it that would be a very large number. Supposedly new gasket will not go but I am selling anyway for other reasons.

My bill was just over 700. Must admit it runs a lot better than it did pre HGF. But then I guess it got a tune etc.

And they washed it, just need to polish.
