MG MGF Technical - HGF possible cause?

Just been to the garage.

When the mechs were running up the car to spot the leak, one of them saw a drip of water in the underhanging corner on the rear right of the block. When enough pressure was reached, water again came out of the gasket just above this point.

Now, the question they asked me.

Is it a porous block in this corner which weakened the block at the gasket, in which case we go for a new block or engine?

Or, was this just some moisture from before and a straight forward HGF, in which case, we skim the head and replace gaskets etc.?

hmmm...

Is this before or after repairs?

If before why dont they take the engine apart and get the parts checked?

If it is after then why did they not check the parts before putting it back together?

Porous heads I've heard of before - but porous blocks?

As Ted says, once the engine is apart, it is possible to get the separate components checked if this is a serious concern (personally, I think it unlikely).
Your decision regarding this is whether it is economical to strip the engine and check what parts are reusable - cheap (relatively) if they are, expensive if they're not.

If not reusable, then it would work out cheaper to get a new, warrantied engine. If you take this route, then there isn't much point paying to have the engine stripped down.

There's your gamble. Cut (potential) losses and go for a new engine, or repair the existing one - and hope nothing nasty turns up in the investigation.

Personally, I'd be tempted to take the latter route.

The right corner of the block (looking from the rear of the car!) is where the HG's go.

The one I've seen "demonstrated", Mel just pumpted up the pressure in the cooling system (with a pressure testing pump) without running the engine at all and water fairly squirted out of the head gaskit.

If its doing it after they've changed the gaskit, did the damage the rubbery tracks in fitting it?

Sorry for butting in,

but could someone explain HGF and what it means and why all the fuss about it. thanks.

Sorry if this is a lame question
thanks

HGF = head gasket failure

Thanks guys, I've gone down the route of having the head skimmed. Have got the parts from Mike Satur as Gwyndaf Evans is a Ford dealership.
Always smiles when the F goes in tho and the mechs love getting their hands on it.

Hi yeah I have coolant leaking from the head, and am planning to get it stripped down. However I have a dilema, hopefully it will be a straight forward skim job, however if theres any more damage it will be costly .Therefore I cant decide whether to get it stripped down and take a gamble or get a new engine.Does anyone know a good cheap supplier where I could get an engine from?
