MG MGF Technical - HGF Question

Hiya

Just a quick one regarding HGF, I've been reading in the archives about what to look out for and have found that my expansion tank has a light brown oily film covering it, is this anything to be concerned about as I have had no loss of what etc?

Thanks

Hi, could be that your coolant is past "best by date". What age of your car and what service has been done ? It is very important to have fresh good coolant in the K-engine as corrosion of both block and head of engine will be severe if not. Also the steel coolant tubes under the car as well as the radiator can be affected by coolant that doesn“t contain enough prohibitors. A check of the freezing temp of the coolant DOES NOT say anything about its protecting when it comes to corrosion !

Thanks for that, its a 97 R and has recently had its 60K service with cambelt change even though its only on 28K.

Its a strange one as everyting else seems OK, just wanted to catch it early incase it could turn into something serious!!

Thanks

Although everything may be fine just take the precaution of checking you coolant and oil regularly. Monitoring take no time at all and if there is a chance that it is a HGF then is is well worth catching early before the thing goes ca-boom.

If you do see any signs of white gooey stuff in the tank just don't drive it and have it looked at immediately.

Specks of mayo on the end of the dipstick may be the result of condensation, however mayo all the way up the dipstick is bad news.

Arron, you don't say what age your car is.

(might be time to invest in an AA warranty (£130!) )

Is the oily film on the *outside* of the tank? Maybe someone spilt oil on something hot when they were topping up the engine??

Take it to a garage and get them to check the coolant expansion tank for hydrocarbons. They use the same probe that is used in the MOT emissions test (I think)
If hydrocarbons/combustion gasses are detected its HGF.
