MG MGF Technical - Hood not going down smoothly

Recently the hood on my '97 VVC does not want to go down as smoothly as it used to. It folds over and down until the front of the hood is about a foot from seating probably then it requires a bit of a push even if you lift the rear hoop. I've inspected and WD40'ed all the joints/hinge points but this has not helped.

Has anyone else come across this problem and if so how did they resolve it.

Many Thanks
Adrian Jones

Lubricate all the joints in the hood. One or more is dry. I used good old 3-in-1 oil last year and no problem since.

Be careful when lowering a MK1 (3 SEAM) 1997 hood. Look carefully and you will see that one fold each side gets trapped in the frame. Consequently it gets pinched and will eventually create a hole. You have to push back this particular fold in the hood back and away from the frame as its being lowered.

Or you can use the "elastic wrapped around hood bows 2 and 3 trick", the problem is caused by the hood's inbuilt elastic losing it's stretch. Works like a dream.

Sounds like a 'lock up' to me.

See the MGF FAQ for an extensive section on 'hood tips' this deals with lock ups among other things.
