MG MGF Technical - Hood rattles: how to stop them

Driving with the soft top on can hear annoying loud rattles that seems to come from the top/rear of the left window -driver side around here-. These are loud tapping, cracking noises, mainly on uneven roads. Did not happen before but are increasing at present and spoil the experience of driving the F. With the top down the noises are off. The hood frame and the window seals seems to be fine. Sorry cannot be more specific about. Any possible places were to look, nuts or cables to adjust? Thanks. Mike

Does the window look as if it's still going into the same position when up, i.e. if you close the window with the door open and then close the door does the top edge of the glass still fit snugly under the rubber seal, or does it rest up against it? Possible the window stop inside the door has let go, allowing the window glass to travel further and thus coming into contact with the frame when roof is closed.

Check that the end of the back window zip is not clattering against the frame.

:-)

Good luck!

In addition to above, try un-doing any pivots you can with an allen key, line the holes with soft solder using a very small butane torch (carefully)like a white metal bearing, and then file/ream etc the holes until the components are a tight fit.
In addition, a drop of oil on the pivots will often damp out any rattles for a month or two!

My Top has hexagon headed pivot bolts with brass bushes. These are lock welded so you may lose the skin on your knuckles or shear the thread from the bolt(s).

Mmmm, don't know what lock welding is?

Mine were done up with locktite, but came apart easily enough when warmed up with a torch.

In lock welding, the end of the bolt is slightly recessed and then is puddle welded to lock it.
Another instance are the boot lid hinge bolts which are tack welded on one hexagon flat.
