MG MGF Technical - How do the diagnosis Computer create ?

Hello,
I want to create a diagnosis Computer .
How do the diagnosis Computer create ?
What do I need ready to create diagnosis Computer ?
Thank you
KUO yuan-hsin

Testbook was only ever made available to approved dealers but they sometimes are sold on Ebay.

There is a small firm in Cyprus making engine diagnosis systems: Check out

http://www.blackbox-solutions.com/docs/faultmate_sv.pdf

but sit down before looking at the price

Hi Kuo,

If your car was built after 2001, then it will be OBD-II compliant, which means that the majority of fault codes can be read by a generic OBD diagnostic kit. There are of course a whole host of MG-specific fault codes, but there is a site on the internet that list these that I can probably search out for you if you are interested :o)

*smile*,
just forget it (until 2002);)

Looks like a simple computer, but the technology inside is hardware and software coded.

Hello

My TESTBOOK(MGF 1.8i) steeps water and causes Hard Disk to be damaged.

I change new Hard Disk.

But my systems are all unable to start the machine.

Do I need to do those procedures and resuming the system?

Thank You

George

Rob,

If you use a "generic" OBD-II fault code reader (such as the cheap and cheerful ones eBay's full of) will they only display standard codes or will they also display the MG-specific ones? If so, would you be able to dig out the code list?

Cheers,
Tim

Ahh, now things come clear.
I think you have no other option then finding someone with a Testbook HD in good working order and _mirror_ the system onto a new HD. (Making a 1:1 copy)

See the subject in the left hand ;)

Unfortunately I do not own one and cannot help.

Good luck

@KUO

It's a bit unclear to me what parts you allready have. I do own a Testbook system, but the more recent one (as shown: http://www.omitec.com/us/products/diagnostic-testers/t4-diagnostic-system )
I have the device working without the orginal laptop as that wasn't a part of the deal. However I have setup a virtual PC (using VMWare) running Win98 (like the laptops) and connecting to the T4 device.

@Tim

You must understand that the OBD-II standard was introduced to control emission related things by the (American) goverment. All other things, stored in and controlled by the ECU are a bit more manufacturer dependant.

The cheap fault-code readers do limit their abilities to just reading the common emission related values. More expensive ones come with software that can read more values (and know what they are reading) depending on the mark and type of the car. The ultimate device and software will interpret the values and tell you if they are OK or not (that's one of the advantages of the Testbook system: even a monkey, able to read, could run a diagnostic and tell you what's wrong and what the possible causes are).

hope this helps in some way.
Erik

Hi Erik,

Thanks for the response. Sorry for changing the topic of the thread slightly, but it might help George too.

I've seen a couple of OBD-II/EOBD readers - one which is standalone and one which is an ELM 327 interface to a PC serial port. Both claim to read both OBD and "manufacturer specific" codes - I assume they will just return the code, and I'd have to find what that meant from somewhere else. The two I've seen are:

http://www.talktomycar.co.uk/Shop/OBD2_Interfaces/mj027.htm
http://www.talktomycar.co.uk/Shop/Code_Readers/mj005.htm

Any idea if these will work? I read somewhere that pin 5 (signal ground) is missing from many MGR vehicles and that some readers won't work because of this!

Cheers,
Tim

Rover specific codes were listed by Dr Dave on Steve Childs' mgrover.org site a little while ago - see here: http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=165933

Can Rover MGF 1.8i use ODB-II/EODB System(Tool) ?
Thank you

Rob - Superb, thanks!

George - It seems that the F is EOBD compliant from 2001 onwards; normal OBD-2/EOBD readers won't work on earlier cars.

Hello,
I do not know http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330118085077&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Stores&refitem=330155319798&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget

Can My MGF 1.8i(1996) use it ?
thank you
George
KUO yuan-hsin

George... as tim has said above you can only use an OBD-2 reader on cars later than 2001... earlier cars require testbook/T4

Dieter... what is the earliest VIN which is EODB compliant? as i'm looking at cars from late 99 to early 02 its a factor i might consider when deciding on one.
cheers
James
J LEWIS

after a bit fo reseach it seems OBD compliance goes hand in hand with mems3 which commences with VIN 522572. Is this the definitive answer?
james
J LEWIS

James, yes it is.
Easy to identify if you open the boot.
The last ECU (MEMS 3) with OBD compliance is a wedge shape alloy casing.
The good old with MEMS 1.9 or MEMS 2.0 has a square shape housing.

@ George,
you cannot use the OBDII.
