MG MGF Technical - I can't open the front boot!

Hi

picked up a VVC mgf today, its scruffy, but mechanically good having had lots spent.

Anyway, I came to open the front boot and the handle in the rear boot is basically pulled to the open position with about 4incjhes of slack cable with it!

So, how to open the front boot and replace the cable or repair it?

Any help appreciated.

Also where do I find the paint code? its a silver colour on a 1997 car.

Thanks
John

Sounds like the cable got snapped or simply came off from the lock at the front.

There are several ways to open the bonnet without breaking anything.
Please don't get me wrong but I don't like to write the *how to break in the car* here to a public forum.
I'm quite sure someone will send you a email soon.

The colour code of your silver car is MNX.
You'll find this code later in the bonnet on the alloy type label, last row.

Drop Andy an email at technical@mgfregister.org - I think that he has the necessary details to release the front bonnet for you :o)

Hi,

thanks for info above, I appreciate the public forum aspect of this too.

Julian, I've not received an email from you yet, but my email has been slow lately, my address is green_mx5@hotmail.com (there is an underscore between green and mx5 that may not be seen due to the underlining)

Thanks

John,

I have replied, but i am going to need you to prove you are genuine before i let you have what i have on this.

Sorry for this, it's potentially quite sensitive information and shouldn't be given out to just anyone (no offence meant, just trying to protect Fs from break ins is all).

Anyway, there are three questions in my mail to you - if you can answer them i'll give you what i know.

Welcome to F ownership! :-)

Paint sounds like Platinum Silver - as Dieter has said it'll be code MNX, a metallic shade.

Mine refused to open a couple of years ago, and I gave in and paid the then local dealer to sort it, at some expense. However, it came back with a new cable fitted, and it's worked a treat since. Thoroughly recommend putting a new cable in and carefully lubricating the lock!

I found out the hard way that if you push on the lever in the boot, the cable comes off at the front. I felt too sheepish to get the dealer to put it back, so I worked it out myself.

The message is if the lever does not return fully, dont push it, lubricate it.

Yep, that's it.
And while you are on there, secure the wire end to the lock hook with help of a cable tie.
