MG MGF Technical - ICE help needed

My old Pioneer head unit that I have fitted in the MGF since I got it has just given up the ghost. So I have just pulled out the origional Phillips Model No: 22DC741/60E that came with the car.

1) Can you please point me a pin-out diagram that will help me wire the Phillips unit back in to the car. (All the origional connectors were cut off when the dealer fitted the Pioneer Grrrr!)

2) Can the Philips unit be used to control the Pioneer CD 6x changer unit Model No: DCX-M30?

3) If so how do I convert from the Pioneer 13-pin connector cord to some thing that I can connect to the MG/Philips unit?

Cheers

From the car end:

It will be obvious that the Aerial is the large black wire with the aerial connector on it.

Steve,

You can get a wiring adaptor from Halfords that will have a chocolate block strip at obe end and the appropriate connectors at the other. I think the F uses standard DIN type.

I doubt very much if the Philips head unit will operate the Pioneer CD changer.

Might be easier to pick up a second hand Pioneer head unit on eBay.

Having spent hours researching the CDX-M30 I don't think its compatable with any thing made in the last 10 years. :-(

I am not a ICE buff but I think I would miss being able to play CDs. Has anybody updraded their system and now have a single slot CD player that they would like to sell?

My contract expires this month so I am not looking to spend very much dosh.

I changed to single CD/MP3 player a while ago. No messing about in the boot. 10 CDs in MP3 format on a single CD, very conveneient. Try dabs.con Sony unit £85, Kenwood unit £91, can't go wrong.

Branko, thanks for the pin outs. I now have an connector with bare wires on one end and an ISO one the other, from Halfrauds (£13.50!). So I will hopefully get it up and running this weekend.

Whilst I have it out (oh ure) I am going to lay the wires for a set of rear speakers.

Can you ICE guru's help? Which of these specs is "best" for a rear speaker?

Frequency Response: 85-20k Hz, 45-30k Hz or 40-80k Hz.
Steve Ratledge

You can't hear abouve 20k, so you choice is set on the lower levels....

More bass response means a nicer (soft) sound, but with equivelent wattages a much higher proportian goes into pushing air with the lower frequencys, so for equivelent wattages the smaller numbers will distort sooner, but sound better when not distorting.

Depends on what you listen to, to hear "the news quiz" I would go for the 85->20k speakers.

How do Clarion speakers rate? Specifically the SRC4616. They 6x4 coaxial, 25/100W, 45-30k Hz all for £25

Or what about the JBL GTO6426 4 X 6 coaxial as used in the VW golf?
Steve Ratledge

For the archive: The centre to centre measurements of the screw holes in the MGF Mk II speaker box are 73mm and 123mm. The boxes will easily accommodate a 50mm deep speaker.

Steve, for speaker recommendations, it may be an idea to pick up a specialist magazine that does a lot of ICE coverage. This may be the first and last time that I ever recommend 'Max Power' - but this mag used to do some useful product comparisons.

Of course, the music the chavs listen to might not be to your taste, but at least it will help narrow your search.

Steve,

the CDX-M30 is a very old model of CD changer. I used to have one nearly 15 years ago (waow, I didn't realise I was so old !!). Pioneer has given up the "M" series for a long time, now it's the "P" series, and they are not compatible.
I would also recommend an MP3 CD head unit...

About rear speakers, I suppose you have a MK1 T-bar ?
So you don't have to fit only 4x6" (like MK2). I'd rather go for 13 cm (5", round) 2-way speakers. You'll have more choice and they are cheaper. They'll even sound better (bigger diameter) and cutting the T-bar is easier too. That's what I did with my old F.

Well I have now soldered the ISO connector in place and the radio works very well.

Corrections to the wireing above.

Speaker Front right +ive = Orange (pink tracer)
Speaker Front right -ive = Orange (black tracer)
12v Display/illumination = Red/Black Fuse 8

Steve Ratledge

Next question, I am having problems getting the radio to slide fully in to the metal cage (yes I have checked behind it). Are the cages specific to various makes of radio?

It could just be that the one in the car is bent out of shape.

I am actually please with the sound that come out of the standard speakers so if you have upgraded your rear speakers and want a good home for the old standard ones let me know.

Steve Ratledge

Cages are usually made for 1 brand only, especially with the unlocking keys there is only room to fit A brand of radio with their supplied cage.

The placement of the locks are all different as well.

Steve,

I agree with Johan, but worth checking to see if one of the tags which you bend to secure the cage is slightly proud and jamming the unit.

Good luck!
