MG MGF Technical - Inlet Pulley

Hi All,

About a week ago my 96 VVC started making a knocking noise from the engine and a local MG garage (not main dealer as they were quotinh 3 weeks before they could look at it) found that the bolt holding the Inlet Pulley had come loose and damages four valve and the VVC unit.
Someone has supplied the link below to a recall in Feb 98 about the VVC cam bolt.

http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/MGF_recalls.htm#r2,

I had the Cam belt replace 14 months ago by a main dealer and it seems to much of a coincident to me. Has anyone else seen this problem.

Regards,

jon, this has been a frequent problem with VVC engines, although this bolt is not undone when changing the belt it would have been prudent for your Rover dealer to check the torque due to the history of this bolt 'relaxing', Rover technical term for coming loose.Head off, new valves, guides and VVC unit I am afraid:-(

What are the symptoms for this happening? I've noticed lately that my motor's started to rattle a bit from the back-end, and am hoping that it's not the same thing.

This happend to me on my 97 VVC. It caused a cam pulley to come lose, causing one of the cam belts to come off. This resulted in the engine needing to be rebuilt and a new VVC unit totaling £1600 of damage.

It is a design problem and yours like mine should have been replaced. Fortunatly my car was still under warranty so it didnt cost me anything.

Agree with you on the "design" problem Andrew, there are preventative steps that can be taken though.

I was lucky to get it ontime, only had a slightly damaged camshaft, which was touched up fine. Received cambolts from Mike, and got them on with loc-tite securely. I was damn lucky, Mike told me to not drive it around, so I didn't. When I called my mechanic to have a listen to it at my house, I started 'clunk clunk clunk', he goes 'oh sh*t, turn it off'. So he called a towing truck to tow it to his garage. I went overseas for 10 days, and came back. It was fixed as good as new. :-)

If I took it to Rover monkeys they probably ran the engine again and again to find the source, damage everything and make me pay for the whole engine. :-( I am glad Mike and my mechanic gave me good advice to keep the engine off and tow it there...

*whew*

I wish you the best fixing your F. I feel sorry for you tho...
