MG MGF Technical - Interior drivers well carpet - replacement!

Hi! Noticed some comments about boot carpets. My
problem is in the cabin. On the drivers side footwell
near the accelerator I notice some (what appears to be
cuts in the carpet) and these are getting a bit worse.
Any advice on how to repair the damage or where
a replacement carpet can be obtained. How easy is it
to re-fit?

Hi Bill,

IIRC, the MGF carpet comes in two sections - one for the passenger side, the other for the driver. The driver's carpet does have some cuts in it - primarily for the steering column - but it shouldn't be splitting. In fact, it is pretty hardy stuff, so I am surprised to hear that the split is becoming worse...

Replacement is reasonably straight forward - but clearly the seat and centre console trim needs removing to aid removal and replacement. Should be possible to source the carpet sections from a scrap yard or specialist autobreaker.

Thanks Rob,

The cuts are not the purpose made ones, but to the
side of the accelerator. It is like the previous
owner has tried to thread some extra wiring through
literally taking a short cut. Could even have been
a lady driver in stilleto's! causing the damage.
Anyway, I will look round scrap yards, etc. in this
area.

Bill,

I am in the process of replacing all the carpets in my F with Biege ones to match the rest of the interior.

To replace the drivers section, you only need to do the following;

Disconnect the battery and leave for 20 minutes. (this will avoid the air bag from deploying when you remove the seat)

Remove the foot rest (3 small hex heads).

Remove the drivers seat (4 T50 TORX head screws) and seat belt bracket (1 T50 TORX head)

Before lifting out the seat, unplug the connector under the seat.

Unscrew the large circular plastic retaining widgets and gently pull out the smaller ones with a large bladed screwdriver.

Undo the small philips screw at the back of the cubby hole box.

Carefuly prise the velcro strip along the sill and lift out the carpet.

Our 2001 F had its driver side carpet changed under warranty at 2 years old. The carpet had split along the lower edge near the throttle, just to the right of where your heel would be. SWMBO doesn't wear pointy shoes when driving and neither do I but the dealers tried to wiggle out on wear/tear, mice etc before they relented. It looked like it had just ripped, a bit like silk does if you stetch it the wrong way - that's what comes from fitting carpets obviously made for some other car I suppose!

Hi! Sam & Tony,

Thanks for the advice, particulary on how to remove
and re-fit the said carpet. Tony, your description of the tear is spot on.

Back to Sam - I note you are fitting beige carpets to
your f. Are they new and if so, where did you order
them from and being presumptious, what was the cost
of a drivers well carpet? I have downloaded your
instructions to one of my files for future reference.

Many thanks.

Mike Satur does a complete carpet kit in various colours for around £230.00 - http://www.mikesatur.co.uk/index.html

Bill,

I bought the complete carpet set some time ago from Newton Commercials, who had a sale on at the time. (£170.00)

I was going to sell the black set on eBay, but have created a hole under the drivers seat while drilling out one of the seat bolts (don't ask) and made a wee hole down beside the driver's seat back adjustment knob while "carefully removong the velcro strip".
