MG MGF Technical - Is this likely to work?

Is this mod likely to do anything?

I have seen a few sceptical threads on similar things !

I still have an ignition problem on the Labrat which is quite infuriating! when the thing gets good and hot ie after say an hours driving it develops a horrible misfire rather like the rev limiter coming in at 4000+ revs...I have the sneeky feeling that the ECU is shot! so looks like I'll have to find a scappy one of an ebay unwanted ecu.

It'll be looked at on Saturday...urgggg!!
so if it is shot, experimenting with this ebay weird resistor idea cant hurt much. if it blows the old ECU so what ! Ive probably got to get a new one anyway

I think I'd replace the coil first Neil - they tend to develop problems when they warm up, yet appear entirely okay when cold...

Regarding the eBay item - oh yeah, this is something that we've discussed here in the past:

"It consists of a small electronic device (Resistor)Ęthat will be inserted between one of your car's sensor and the ECU. This is also know as a 'piggy back' device as it is external to the main processing unit (the ECU). "

Two things:
1. They are charging you 4 quid for something that costs a couple of pence from Maplin/ RS etc
2. It alters the 'apparent' inlet manifold temperature - ie it fools the ECU into thinking that the charge temperature is cooler than it is - altering the ignition advance and fuelling. This maybe okay - OR it may be very bad, depending on the circumstances. Over-fuelling is bad. But so is too much ignition advance. Both for very obvious reasons.

I wonder what resistance value is attributed to this "electronic device (resistor)"?

Yeah I am hoping it's the coil too!

resistor sounds like poo!
will forget!

Neil

The gut selling these resisitors must be coining it in. He sells tons of them!
Bob Millar

Glad to see you've resistor'd it :-)
