MG MGF Technical - Jumping out of gear

For about a month now my 1998 VVC has been jumping out of 5th gear when quietly cruising along. It happens at least once on every trip to work (12 miles of country roads). Has anyone else experienced this? Is there an easily solution? Or should I just scrap it as it had HGF last week? Dare I ask my brother to fix this too (my mechanic)?

Thanks

Yes, this happened to my '97 VVC when it was brand new. As you say, it happens when driving quietly - as when the car was 'running-in'.
In my case, the gearbox was changed under warranty, but it may just be a selector problem.
Checking the gear-change mechanism should be easy enough, your brother can probably advise you better when he's seen it.
>>Or should I just scrap it as it had HGF last week?<<
I fully understand your statement - but you really need to sort the problem and then, perhaps, sell it.
If you logon as a member then you will find other examples of this problem in the archives - but it's not a common problem.

Hi Elaine,

According to Parkers, a VVC in fair condition (which is probably actually quite tatty) is worth £5K, and trade in around £7.5K, so the car's worth a lot more once repaired than what you could get as scrap for it. Plus summer is just round the corner.

HGF is a pain (especially in the last two weeks when the weather up here's been so good), but with the improvements in the locating dowels and the uprated gaskets, hopefully this should be your only experience with this 'F' weak spot.

It's probably a good idea to get the gear box done at the same time as the HG replacement (and replace the cam belts too), as everything's in the same area (I think).

Parkers say a 98 vvc is worth £5k, i lost £3k in a year?

When has trade-in been worth more than private?
I'm hoping its a typo.
I Hope not

Elaine, could just be low oil, worth trying first.

I need to update, filled at last 0.6 Litre to the 99 made car (no leaks)

Does the Mgf have 5 gears i was under the impression that it only had "3" lol thats all we need here.
On a more serious note this same prob happened to a mate with a 99 mpi and it was low oil level

so we had in 99 an oil crysis as well. ;)

i had the same trouble with a 1.6i peugeot 306. the prop shaft seals were gone which leaked oil. easy to repair, new seals new oil. trouble is the damage that the dry gearbox does to the bearings etc. the seal cost £3 to repair. the bu**ered bearings cost £200, and it needed a whole new 3rd and 5th. I would get it sorted before your gears fry
