MG MGF Technical - Just when I thought it was safe...

Discovered a new (Some Birthday present!) cause of engine failure.(unless anybody has had this before???) The small locating dowels on the water pump can work loose and drop between the cam belt and gears causing the timing to jump or destroy the belt with disasterous consequences.Still investigating this one but why on earth these are not onto blind holes on the pump is a mystery to me.

PS Update on above engine is bent valves on 3/4 cylinders:-(

As you've never seen this before - and certainly I've never heard of it before - is this likely to be a major problem Mike?

Mind you, the ratio of likelihood of occurrence to level of damage probably makes it worth checking out...

Ed, not something to get paranoid about but worth telling the garage at the next service to 'centre pop' the dowel/pump to prevent this happening. This is going to be a head off and 4 valves and maybe seats/guides, cam belt, damaged cam gears /bottom pulley/ water pump all for the sake of one tiny dowel! If this was a shouldered dowel or even a roll pin this would not have happened,a design error IMO.BTW this car has 24k miles on the clock and is a '96 model VVC.

I would be pleased to host them to the desaster webside
:)

Someone in D reported an engine damage the other week. He was told by the garage that the cause was a 'leaking water pump' was the reason.
Now if those dowels come loose, doe's this also mean that the whole pump can get loose and leak ?
Just a speculation of the 'master of desaster'

Is this the same scenario that beset Annelisa's car a few months back? Certainly sounds familiar: cam belt failure in association with a destroyed water pump...
