MG MGF Technical - k-serie engines features
I want to know tipical features about k-series engine: a frind of mine say k-series engines are fully alluminium made. Is this true?
cnerone
>>Is this true? << Yes and No ... It is an aluminium alloy with steel liners. crank and cams etc are steel also :-) but generally yes, your friend is correct - the K series is regarded as an aluminium engine (as are most recent engines ?) Steve

Cnerone, I wish I knew how to pronounce (say) your name. Check out this site www.members.tripod.com/~RoverSD_1/k-series.html It has some usefull information about the k series engine. Bruce

Bruce's site as an active link. http://www.members.tripod.com/~RoverSD_1/k-series.html

Good evening Australia! and thanks. :¬)
Bruce Caldwell
Well actually the crankshaft, liners, camshafts and flywheel are cast iron. The whole engine weighs less than 100 kg, PG1 transmission less than 50 kg.
Paul Hollingworth
FYI - there's a good article on K-series reliability this month in Evo magazine
Stephane
is k-serie engine weight lower than "normal" engine mounted by other car builder? it is harder o easyer to damage in front of these others?
cnerone
Stephane - Evo Magazine, is that a French publication? What is their conclusion regarding the reliability of the K-series? cnerone - The K-engine is definitely among the lightest car engines around, but IMO also one of the most fragile.
Jon
>Evo Magazine, is that a French publication? English car tuning/perfromance car mag. Conclusion: Rover say the fagility is down to tuning (but they dont specify if boring out the pistions and lengthening the stroke to get it to 1.8l is 'tuning')
Will Munns
Bought the mag last night, but not read the article yet. I think it relates more to engine failures that occur as a result of extensive engine fettling - and doesn't mean to cover the sort of "run of the mill" failures that we are more familiar with.
Rob Bell
Rob, correct. Still an interesting article though in the sense that it basically shows how well sorted the K Engine was (at the time vs. competition). Interesting as well for the comments on tuning (I recall the guys at B&G saying that the "K series" was one of the best platform for tuning purposes - in its standard guise). Finally, in EVO as well, news that the Elise mark III (for eurpoean markets) will still rely on the K engine (as opposed to a Toyota engine for US market).
Stephane
I found EVO's website http://www.evo.co.uk but nothing about the K-article. Never heard about the mag, dont think is not sold in Scandinavia. Would sure be interesting to read what they think about the engine.
Jon
Jon, provide me with your fax number off-line on sroussel@JNJFR.jnj.com and I will fax it to you on monday.
Stephane
Any chance someone could scan it and make it available? Tim.
Tim Jenner
Text is a bit small but there is a scan on the SELOC site http://forums.seloc.org/viewthread.php?tid=4038
