MG MGF Technical - K&N and fuel
The most i have had out of my tank of petrol is 290! How the hell are people coming up with the number in excess of 350! (410!!!!) Thats crazy! What am i doing wrong? Anyway, thats not what i am on about. The K&N 57i filter is said to increase the the BHP of the VVC by 15 BHP and cause the engine to really growl. 1 - what have people like Edd and MW had when they have fitted / tried to fit the filter to their engine with regards to the hit on their insurance? 2 - i am hopeless and fitting things, still trying to sort out the bloody start button!!! They say that it is easy to fit the air filter, one hour - well considering it was only a 20 min job to do the wiring for the start button that means about 6 days for the filter (wires and colour blindness dont go together!) 3 - buying on line. Where??? Cant find anyone that does like a factory delivery. Eg dabs, amazon but for air filters... thanks, J |

| I tend to average 350 miles, not quite breached the 400 miles per tank barrier yet, but have come close occasionally - depends on how brave i am with the fuel guage - i tend to fill up when the needle is in the middle of the red, i tend to bottle it though as the needle drops towards the bottom, even though i know there is probably plenty of fuel left! LOL :-) SF |

| The Elise version doesn't include the cold air induction pipes. Having said that, it's a big price difference - I bought an Elise K&N and some cold air pipes from Halfords. Tim. |

That is quite a bit cheaper than other places. Also, it doesnt seem too difficult to fit. Simply remove the old one, add the new one, stick in some piping and roberts your dads brother... still not happy about my fuel economy compared to others... |

Also, get hold of a guy called Tom Randell. He'll be around the forum and usually spots threads relating to K&N filters as he sells a rather nifty bracket for securing the cold air pipes to the underside of the car, much better than the suggested method of using zip ties. He only charges £12 delivered I think and it's well worth it. >> still not happy about my fuel economy compared to others Do you find that you sit in traffic jams a lot? I am lucky in that most of my driving is pretty open and free flowing. As you live near the London Car Park your mix might be very different to mine. If this is not the case then get the car to a dealer and get them to run it through a testbook. |

| John Re fuel consumption Best ever has been 358 miles on a tankfull and the worst 270 miles to the tankfull.The 358 miles was achieved whilst running the car in for the first 1000 miles, the average is about 310 to the tankfull (about 46 litres or 10 gallons). So therefore my fuel consumption varies between 27mpg and 35mpg. I have found that there are alot of factors that effect consumption, e.g the position of the softop and windows, make of fuel (Total Best BP worst) but the two main factors are the length of the journeys and the amount of lead in my right foot. The car is a 2002 TF160 which will be 2 years old at the end of this month and has been trouble free. Des |

| Any one interested in the cold air pipe bracket as mention by Phil email me for further info and how to order. I have plenty in stock. The price is £12 which inc P&P. As for fuel consumption I dont think I have ever had less than 350 miles out of the tank and seams to improve with age as my car has done over 92000 miles and does not matter how I drive slowly, fast, boy racer style I keep getting over 350 miles and have managed 430 out of a tank. | Over the holiday weekend I went down to devon in my mgf and averaged 38 mpg on a 650 mile round trip, average speed between 80 and 90 mph with a k & N filter, 52mm throttle body and meiltek exhaust. When I filled up even though not on empty I had done 380 miles, I was well impressed. Oliver |

| Hi, I tend to get around 350 miles from a tank. also i had no increase of insurance with fitting of taipan kit and daytona quad. |

| What then can i do to get me fuel consumtion up - could it be the air filter that i have got? If that is in a state does it cause a problem with the firing - i suppose it does? I know that the guy i bought it off had a K&N and took it off before he sold me the car. he sold it on ebay... |

| What education did you get? Since when was £57.50 less than £42???? When you add £12 for a bracket from Tom and pipes from Halfords and the fuel you use running around to get it all together. Sorry Bob but a few days on the Highlander taught me the value of a pound :-) |

| Bob, please follow the links through before criticising my education. If you click on your link you are taken to the rallynuts site. If you then click on the K&N link (which admittedly says £44) you are taken to the filternuts site. On here the only K&N kit I can find for the Elise costs £52.80 + £7.95 delivery, giving, if my education doesn't let me down, a total of £60.75, which at my school was always more than £57.70. If there is a filter on there for the Elise that costs £44.00 then fair enough, but I can't find it. |

| Spooky Bob Your last comment was at 20:14 and at 20:16 a friends Basset Hound got it's lead wrapped round the leg of a table at the pub. Frador (for that was the dog's name) pulled like hell and spilled 3/4 pint of Adnams Ale. If you could have held back just 5 minutes the beer would have been drunk instead. BTW Bob, was it you who spent last weekend driving round Loch Lomond and stayed in a campsite overnight? If so, could I have the name and/or location of the site please? |

| Have no idea what the insurance increase was. As i declared it all at the same time as my wheels and body mods soz. I can easily get 350 mpg out of the tank, ive got over 400 before aswell when doing long runs. :) I go on the thoery, dont drive like me dad! Dad likes to slowly get to 70mph not going over 1200rpm. we as i like to get to 70 as fast as possible and keep it there! haha |

Modern ECU design does a better job than most people at controling fuel, so harsh acceleration is not as costly as it could be (although it does over richen the fuel some) 1.2k rpm the ECU will be fighting you, the MEMS doesn't allow RPM that low (try it warm with no load) |

| The only section that i can see might be a problem is 6.2 - "Now peer down into the engine bay, from inside the car looking towards the rear. On the right, near the bottom of the engine bay is a black plastic box. This is the resonance chamber. On its inner surface, there is a rigid elbowed plastic tube pointing upwards towards you, that once lead into the airbox that you have just removed. This needs to be removed to enable you to later thread through the 57i cool air induction tubing. It comes free will a non-too-gentle tug (it won’t damage anything - pictured, opposite)." I assume this become clear when you are doing - one thing, how can you sit in the car and look down the engine bay towards the rear right - surely the hood is in the way?? |
