MG MGF Technical - K&N Induction Kit

Hi all,

we are looking at ordering a K&N 57i Induction kit for our new TF. Having never made any real modifications to our F (other than adding a rear high level brake light) I was wondering about how effective the induction kit is on a TF 135 & what other alternatives there are.

Cheers

DON'T rush out and buy as from memory the TF has a far better air box as standard than the F's had so you need to go to something like an ITG. Check in the archives and I am sure that someone will give you the right answer very soon.

Sally, the K&N will make the car a lot noisier. If you don't want this another options is to fit a ITG panel filter into the exisitng air box, giving you improved air flow without the increased noise level. A 52mm throttle body should also be considered.
Dave

You could also get a cool air intake system which should be worth a few bhp without any more induction noise (I prefer exhaust noise!). I managed to do a fairly simple DIY system - if you were interested I could send the instructions. No need for side air scoops either - see the photo.

Mike Cunningham

TF Airbox has two inlet pipes with trumpets on the end to smooth air flow in ( big improvement over F which has a single corrugated pipe with no air smoothing). One of these can be redirected to the passenger side rear wing air intake.
Dave

Thanks for the advice all. I think we might look into the throttle body option. Perhaps when the next service is due. (the biggie)

K&N sounds simply brilliant. On a cruise, the car sounds no louder than standard, but open up the taps, and the induction roar is wonderfully addictive. :o)

Do it, you'll love it!

If you're after some extra power, the open K&N cone isn't necessarily the best due to the heat in the engine bay (although the air ducts are surprisingly effective) - but there are plenty of cunning solutions for this...

A panel filter won't be quite so effective - unless you do what Mike and others have done and re-direct the intake hoses to a cooler area, such as the nearside air intake.

The throttle body will improve throttle response. On a 1.8i engine however, the power gain is minimal (just 1bhp when I back-to-back tested this mod on my car) - so you need to be sure that you want to invest your hard-earned cash in a mod with limited performance gain (but there is potential there if you undertake more extensive engine modifications later).

Hope this helps

Sally,

the TF135 already has the 52mm throttle body as standard.

Hi all,
Don't meant to hi-jack the thread, but as we're on topic anyhooo...Trophy 160 and 57i is allegedly not the best combo. Loss of power and more noise - noise is fine - it's K&N and only when you open her up - which id PERFECT. but how come the loss of power, and how much. Big Fun 51 seems to have the limiter set at 6k revs - is this right. sorry loads of questions now. feel like a newbie again. Should have gone with the 98 vvc - i was in my comfort zone then...

Cheers in anticipation

The F down pipe has a bad mismatch with the manifold and an internal weld.

Not sure if these were carried over to the TF, but it's worth checking as these also caused curable losses.

"Big Fun 51 seems to have the limiter set at 6k revs - is this right?"

No, it should go all the way to the sun - there is something that can limit the revs but I can't remember for the life of me, useless. Probably just a failed VVC mech... :-D

No loss of power - in a set of filter tests we did a few years back, we didn't see much of a power gain, but certainly power is not lost. The problem with the 57i is heat soak - worse at slow speeds or stationary. Hot air means reduced air density, means less oxygen, means less bang. Enclosed filter systems are far, far better in this respect.

The Trophy, along with all TF models, benefit from a larger airbox with better air intakes (two as opposed to the originals one) - which means that the advantages of flow that the 57i and similar filters aren't as great as that found for earlier MGFs.

Hope this helps

Does anybody know if the better tf airbox fits the f? thanks, matt.
matt

So the answer might be to fit a 'better' filter rather than a full induction kit?

Sally

I have just removed my pipercross induction kit and replaced the original airbox. bought a pipercross panel filter from Mike Satur and a pipercross cold air feed kit, and have run the ducting from the passenger side air intake vent and sealed it into the airbox. now the only air it can draw in is cold air from outside as opposed to warmer air from the manifold. try it, much better....
