MG MGF Technical - Lamda sensor striped thread

You can buy a sensor 'flange', which could be easily welded into place after the old boss was ground off.

While you're there you can buy a 'universal' sensor which is _way_ cheaper than the rover part and comes with all the stuff to fit it correctly.

is this "guess the question" time ?
JohnP

It's me preempting a question about emmisions failures, which leads on to a lengthy thread coving catalitic converters, then the garage says it's the lamda sensor - £70 + fitting, fitting strips the thread in the boss and they require a new exhaust manifold - total cost about £400.

See this is preemptive optimization, to get here normally would be 60 or so posts, and I've limited it to 3 and saved someone a lot of money. I've also given it a good name so it's easy to find in the archive - what more could you ask.

Supplemtal - you could use this oppertunity to buy a 4-2-1 manifold and get more power
Will Munns

Brilliant idea Will. Do you think it will catch on? If I were as young as you, then I would have caught on much earlier. Maybe you could work on a version for the "bewildered" amongst us.
JohnP

Will... so close... if only you'd spelt "stripped" correctly ;-) yeah... call me wise guy...

BTW... I don't get out to Balsham much these days as I've just moved up to Ely... is it still there? full of those boy racers hanging around the bandstand? or is that you...

Chris.
Chris Tromans

Yep, yep, no.

So it wasn't you driving into cambridge two days ago?

At least if people search for "stripped" they will get the thread now!
Will Munns

I don't think it was me.... silver F, V reg... cat fur on the hood... I dunno, I move house and I think the b@stard cat has followed me...

The wrong answer to the unknown question.

The Boss thread is M18x1.5 ie 18mm spark plug thread and should take a Helicoil. A little cheaper than a new Manifold.
A New MGR Sensor for the 2000MY is approx £120 + vat.( I have a receipt for Two !!)
Dieter Gives Bosch 0258 003 229 for the early MGR MHK10006 sensor.
Anybody know the equivalant for the later MGR MHK100840 ??

I had a look for helicoils but didn't see them this big (although if they are the same thread as sparkplugs they _must_ be available). Even so, this plate is a lot cheaper, but requires welding. Given the choice I would chose the helicoil if it could be done in the engine bay (not sure of the clearance?). If you have to pull the manifold you might as well weld in a new boss.

The 'Universal' four wire (£26 +vat) should fit any four wire system, the diffrent part listings are for diffrent lengths of wire and plugs. With the 'universal' sensor you have to reuse your origninal plug and most of the wire, it comes with heatproof braid, crimp 'joiners' and heatshrink for the connectors.

I will let you know if I fail the MOT in march
