darren jeffery

Hi Darren, check out Dieter's website for the wiring colour codes and diagrams (http://www.mgfcar.de/)

What's the problem - a bulb gone?

Not sure what you mean by "it goes one side was lit up on the dashboadthe other side wasnt." Are we talking about the main instrument cluster? Unlit speedo/rev counter?
Rob Bell

hi rob how are u

yes it looks like the bulb its on the side off speedo where the hand brake light is

as i said before put the light on last night leaving work the rev counter side was ok but the other side isnt no light whatsoever ....
on top of the dash there are lights one side looks dimmer would u have the codes for the bulbs once again they look like little rectangles ...

darren thanks mate
darren jeffery

yep its the unit speedo cluster side that has know light
now
darren jeffery

Two types of lighting on the dash, front lighting and rear. Not quite sure which one you've lost from the description - but you can probably work it out from what you are seeing.

The 'front' lighting unit is mounted just above the instrument binnacle.

If you have a look on Dieter's on line EPC, you can see an exploded diagram that explains thing better than a 1000 words: http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/1783.htm

You can see the component in question labelled as '16'. However, it is just one bulb (or appears that way) so doesn't explain your one-sided dimness? I suspect that there is more bulbs involved than are being shown!

The back lighting is for the odometer and trip (bulb labelled '18') - so that is not likely to be it either...

Hmm. Perhaps I am missing something.

Some additional pictures can be found on Andy's http://www.sfforever.co.uk/ site, and also here: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/carclub/mgfregister/temp/instruments/instrument_lighting.htm

darren jeffery

its the rear speedo lighting thats gone what bulb would i have to get then

darren sorry for asking stupid questions
darren jeffery

Looks like bulb 13 (lucky for some) is the one you need to get Darren. The bad news is that you need to disassemble the instrument pack to gain access to it. Not hard, but more complication than perhaps you might have wanted...
Rob Bell

tell me about it do they store them from halfords would it wise for me to get a binnicle bulb 2...

would u have the codes or should i dismantle and take it will they be able to match it up...

New to this thread (Hi Darren and Rob) :-)

OK, if it is the speedo bulb that is gone than you do not need to dismantle the entire instrument cluster to change the bulb, but you do need to be able to get to the back of it and this means removing the cluster from the dash, here's how...

-----------

Open the bonnet and remove the shroud panel. Find the joint in the speedo cable and disconnect it.

Using a Philips head screwdriver (a dumpy helps) undo the 4 screws that retain the binnacle cowl, unclip the multiplug for the dimmer switch (and the mirrors too if you have 'leccy ones) - remove cowl. You may need to unclip the top of the steering collumn cowl (it just unclips) too to give you access.

Again using the Philips screwdriver, remove the four retaining screws for the instrument cluster. Pull the cluster out of the binnacle - note if it is tight it's due to the speedo cable, feed the cable into the dash a little from under the bonnet. Reach behind the cluster and unplug the three multiplugs and the speedo cable. Remove cluster.

-----------

Now, with the cluster out, turn it over and look at the back of it. You will find there are a lot of bulbs in holders in the back of the cluster - see this photo:

The bulb holders correspond with the warning lights in the cluster around the sides and also for the milometer illumination. You should be able to simply find the bulb holder and twist it to release, now withdraw it from the cluster. Replace the bulb - job done.

If it is the general ambient light that has gone, these are at the top of the cluster in the black section. Follow the wires on the top of the cluster to find the bulbs - replace as necessary.

Can't tell you what the bulbs are sadly, but i can say that the ones at the top (i think from memory there are two of them) are smaller than the ones that plug in the back. This is because i have sheathed mine with red sleeves to change the colour of the illumination and i had to use different sized rubber sleeves to do the whole thing (in the end i removed the mileometer sleeve as it was too dark to read!)

Hope this helps

Andy, you forgot the Haynes manual 'refitting is a reversal of the removal procedure' statement! LOL

Just to mention... I had the old "one side of the instruments lit up" gag on my MGF a few weeks back... days of having old TVs led me to give it a tidy bash on the top with my hand...

...it's been absolutely fine ever since ;-)

Definitely looking forward to MGF10 - I know what the planned talks are, and they're not going to be something anyone will want to miss! And that's not the only thing going on either...

I have a feeling that the day is going to fly by and I'll still not get to see and do everything that's on offer... :o)

New bulb from Halfrauds? Excellent. Funnily enough, my F's oil temp gauge bulb's just gone - hopefully will be able to buy a replacement there too! :o)
