MG MGF Technical - Leak

Can any one advise on whether they have experienced the following two problems I have and how it was fixed.

Firstly I have water gathering in the carpet behind the right hand side of the drivers seat.

The second problem I think I have seen on here before but can’t find anything. There are two small holes on each side of the roof mid way down on identical positions. I guess that something has been rubbing when the hood is folded.

Any suggestions are appreciated thanks.
Timothy

Matching holes, either side of the hood, just where the fabric gets trapped in the frame when it folds?

Sorry I have no solution to you problem only a similar one my self.I have water gathering in the passanger side footwell and I can not figure where exactly it is coming from. Has anyone got any suggestion as to where the leak is originating from, how it enters the passanger footwell and how to stem the flow:(

Cheers
Chris.

I get that problem only when I wash the car with a hose I think it creeps under the rear of the hood I don't know if this helps!

Yep I had this

Depending on the age of your car (mine is old enough) it could be the foam seal between the heater box and the bulkhead leaking.

Find the thread "leak through heater" in the MGF technical archive for full details.

The water collects round the big black plastic box and then leakes through the foam seal.

If you remove the glove box and get some black sealant from halfords and then put this from metal to the plastic box it will stop the leak. You need to lie on your back with legs in air over the seat and take a torch to see.

It's a well known fault.

The box is basically the air intake for the heater but die to bad design it fills with water that doesn't drain.

I had soaking insulation which I placed over my garden fence and then used a wallpaper roller to remove the water and then hung in the greenhouse to dry

Water BEHIND the seat on the passenger side can come from several sources.
1 Rain gets into the drip channel around the rear of the hood . If there is a bad join in the wing and centre section of the bodywork (the bit below the rear windown in front of the boot)then water will leak through into the parcel shelf behind the passenger and find its way down to the floor level by running down the bulkhead behind the passenger's back. It runs under the carpet and may show up as rust traces if you lift the parcel shelf carpet. The leak can be remedied with sealant.

2 Rain can leak in (with the help of gusts of wind) at the side just to the left of the passenger's shoulder. This is where the waistline of the door meets the bottom of the hood. Make sure there are no deformation in the rubber mouldings and that the window and hood fits correctly.

3 The seal around the door is a hollow tube and is also used to channel water. Water can enter the tube from the A post seal end or from the point where the seal meets the soft top roof by the passenger's shoulder. A close inspection will reveal an entry hole into the tube at this point. The aforementioned drip channel can drain into it at this point. Water in the tube collects at the bottom and was originally supposed to drain out via a small slit in the seal in the middle of the bottom run. This has been known to drain out on the inside instead of the outside causing flooded footwells etc. A later mod was to cut two sections out of the seal in the lower run so that there was no doubt that the water would escape outwards. The cuts were/are aprox 2 cms long and the tube section of the seal was exposed.

These are observations and experiences gained from my 96MGF

Hope this helps
