MG MGF Technical - Life Expectancy

We are currently putting about 10 - 12 K a year on our Y2K F & wondered out of interest, what IYO could be considered a resonable to good life expectancy for the F's engine, & for the long time owners what have you done to keep the F going?

Details from others but there are a lot of 80k+ cars on the bbs and many 100k+. Some, but certainly not all, have had HGs replaced but otherwise just normal service items.

there are plenty of k's with 200k miles on them, usually in rep rovers.

the running gear is basic metro, and nothing flash.

when the engine finally does need a spruce up, there are replacement parts for everything in the engine from crankshafts to piston liners.
modern oils are very good at protection and engines last a lot longer because of it.
Will Munns

Two Rovers and an F: 400k between them (enough to drive to the Moon!). One HGF aside, I never felt that the engine was likely to be a problem.

Plenty of 100k mile plus Fs regularly turn out for MGoT track days, and you're far more likely to see smoke coming from their tyres than their engines ;o)
Mike Hankin

Lots of motorway miles is supposed to be better than lots of short hops to the shops (or church!) so not an easy question to answer. However with a bit of TLC and (most important!) regular changes of decent oil then well over 100k must be easy. Once the car is over 10 years old, it owes you nothing and spending on an engine rebuild to deliver another 100k miles must be a worthwhile investment. Ours in now very much a second car, doing only 5k to 6k pa, mostly on holidays. It is now 9 years old and I am looking forward to it being promoted from old banger to classic as the years pass! (A bit likes its owner!)

Cheers

Patrick

PS With the passing of MGR I no longer feel any guilt at not buying a new car to help them out.

Ks really are exceptionally tough engines - the only achilles heal is that well celebrated appetite for head gaskets - which is more a problem associated with the design of the coolant system than anything else.

Depending on the type of use and maintenance the engine gets, 200k is a realistic expectation from one of these engines before major rebuild. You might need one or two gaskets by then though... ;o)
Rob Bell

Thanks for your replies all, they are much appreciated! Certainly sets the mind at ease. What with the F being our only vehicle, not being in a position to replace it any time soon, & having moved further out from work we are racking up the miles.

Patrick, just like you we are looking forward to our F moving from old banger status to modern classic, & believe it or not even looking forward to the next HGF so that it can have the MS treatment. ;> (We won't tell the AA parts & labour people that though will we??)

Cheers all
