MG MGF Technical - Life of an exhaust

Whwn I fitted my K%N three years ago, I decided to fit a stainless steel eaxhaust but wait until the original exhaust packed up rather than replace a prefectly good system. Now the car is 8 years old and the exhaust goes on and on. Being a tight a**ed Yorkshireman, I cannot bring myself to throw away a working system but how long do these last?
Brian

I was told the early ones were stainless steel.
Andrew Regens

The orginal MGF exhause is stainless steel - while it is not the "pretty, shiny" stainless steel, It is the sort that does not rust!

Ours is 9 years old and still going strong!

Now if you had bought a TF when the Leyland boys got MGR for a tenner you would only have to wait 2 years for the exhaust to fall to bits!

Ain't life a bummer!

mine lasted about 8.5 years after showing up as a warning for two MOTs, and to be fair it was still running fine except I had to have it off to change the flexipipe.
Will Munns

Flexipipe changed on my '96 vvc, rest of system going strong when I swapped it to a TF.

The TF now has an XPower system on it byt the oem was perfect and now in store.

Sounds to me Brian that the only sensible option here is to go ahead and order the new sports exhaust and put the old one on e-bay to re-coup some of your cash!

:-) :-) :-)

>>and put the old one on e-bay to re-coup some of your cash<<

Only trouble is,.. no one will want to buy it, as there will be nothing wrong with their original systems!!.

;o)

mine is 8 year old factory fitted, only blowing as last owner dented it ,causeing it to blow at the seems, like you i don,t like to bin items if they are still servicable, past m o t , last to years like this, but need to sort out a ss one......

I finally got the excuse last year when one of the tail pipes fell off - 8 years old.

I was itching to replace it anyway and had almost decided that if you are going to do it you may as well get the benefit before the rest of the car gives up.
Peter Ambrose

So it looks as if I should budget for a replacement in Spring '06 when my car will be just over 8 years old?

Brian

You are being a tad over optimistic. I know of at least 2 9+ year old Fs with the orginal exhaust and also spotted that some of the 10 year old Fs at the recent excellent Gaytdon event still sported the orginal exhausts.....

Sold my OEM pipes on Ebay got £50 or so for them. they were early originals but were definateley not very shiney.

On th eother hand my TT pipes will last forever, in fact somebody commented that after the apocalypse when the sum total of humanity is reduced to a mountain of rubble, sticking out of the top will be those pipes shining in the summer sun!
