MG MGF Technical - Loose Fuse Panel

Drove the MGF for the first time in ages at the weekend and noticed that the lower metal edge of the fuse panel was hanging loose. I've attempted to screw it back in place but I'm unsure if I've been 100% sucessfull. Can anyone provide a description or pictures that show how it is attached and what fixings are involved?

TIA

Adrian

Might be something relevant to this on Dieter's website Adrian - have a look under Carl's modifications, where he modified the fuse panel lid to increase leg room...

Thanks Rob.

There is a picture of the offending item after Carl took a saw to it...

...but no details of the fixings in the footwell. My panel has the two square plastic inserts at each end as per the above pic. I'm wondering if there are any other mating fixings in the footwell or just the two bare metal holes that I have?

Adrian

I *think* that's it...

Another site that might prove useful is Andrew's : http://www.sfforever.co.uk/

If you do the screws up they should leave a sholder, the notch on the car goes slots below the screwhead, so from the bottom up:
Screwhead
Notch in car metalwork
hole in metalwork of panel
plastic stud

You may have overtightned the screw and revoved the required clearance.

... so at first loosen the bolt, push on to the notch, then tighten :)

Another non clear spot on.

Showing in *reverse* sequence RH & LH
- Plastic stud -square shape, black coloured-
- (hole in metalwork)
- *missing here* > the notch in car including metalwork
- Screwhead

The *missing here* > the notch in car including metalwork

Thanks Rob, Will & Dieter

From your descriptions it would appear that I've not got it quite right - but it isn't easy when you're upsidedown in the footwell.

Adrian,

Are you able to secure the top part of the panel with the 2 plastic screws? or is the bottom part broken off?

The plastic screws are held up by plastic rectangular mounts that do bend out of shape and let the plastic screws fall out which then lets the panel fall onto your legs. If this is your problem read on...otherwise, sorry for wasting your time. :-)

Here is how I made these mounts work better:

1: Remove plastic rectangular mounts from car.

2: Put the keetle on the boil for 2 cups of tea.

3: Make your cup of tea enjoy it and sip it slowly. *** CAFEFUL WATER IS HOT! *****

4: From the kettle, pour the spare boiling water into another clean cup, place the 2 mounts into the cup.
This softens the plastic.

5: CAREFULLY... with a pair of needlenose pliers remove the mounts (one at a time) and squeeze the top together so that the lugs get closer together. While doing this put the mounts under the cold water tap. This will set the lugs closer together. This will make sure that he plastic screw has lots of tension when inserting into the mounts.

6: Put mounts back into the metal cutout under the dash (from where you removed them).

7: Turn the plastic screws so that the screw head cutout is horizontal. Push up the plastic screw and using a large stubby flat screwdriver, turn the screw and push it up. It will catch the plastic mounts securely and it will stay up.

8: Finish cup of tea. Job well done.!

Hope this helps.
Branko.
