MG MGF Technical - Loose Rear Hub Nut

Looking for some more help after all the great help I had in early July with my HGF. Thanks.
I have had ongoing problems since Feb with a rear hub nut coming loose at odd times. The last time in June the local Rover/MG dealer torqed it up but thought the bearing etc should all be changed although they couldnt tell if was damaged without stripping it down. I declined on the basis once torqued up there was no movement or play in wheel and no noise could be heard. Now again this week I noticed the rear end doing strange things and the nut is loose again. Has anybody had this problem or any ideas. Many Thanks

If you are talking about the drive shaft nut then if the staking has been used properly there is no way it come loose. Get a new one fitted and stake it correctly.

The torquing is to set the correct preload on the bearing, the staking is to prevent the nut loostening.

It failed on my TF and cost me bearing and flange.

Thanks Ken, I am actually on my third Nut this year the last one being fitted by the Rover/MG dealer, so one assumes torqued and staked properly, but still hasn't held.

My hub nut undid from the factory - I would have assumed they staked correctly but apparently not.

Take a look at the nut. There's a open top hat section that extends out from hex nut part. This should be deformed with a punch into the slot in the drive shaft. You can see it clearly when the wheel is removed. A massive torque is needed to undo the nut if the staking isn't relieved first.

They will come loose even if they are torqued and staked correctly. The use of anaerobic thread-lock helps but I have found that I need to check mine after every race meeting and the rears always needed nipping up a tad. On a road car I would suggest checking at every service at least. They do have a history of failure.

What happens to the staking when the nut comes loose?

I've heard of the failures when there has been a wheel bearing or drive shaft spline problem. Usually the opposite problem occurs, you need a 3ft plus lever to undo the nut with the staking properly relieved.

Is this a common problem without some other failure?

Ken, Thanks for your help. The staking has definitely moved, it is three months since it was done by the garage. I am going for a new bearing kit, new washer and staking that hopefully wont move. Can I just check with you the correct torque setting, I have been told by MG Owners that it should be 210nm, however my mechanic thinks it should be 240nm.

Smart move I think, somethings not right. If anything in that area parts company at high speed pointing the car in the right direction might prove a bit difficult.

Both manuals I have say 210nM and that's what I used when I did the job.
